Ladson-Billings discusses the importance of connecting with all students and believing that every child can succeed. In order for children to succeed, they need to believe in themselves. If educators can teach children confidence and content, then success is inevitable.

Communities that don't invest in their children will continue the "Mathew Effect". When a community invests in its children's education they will grow. This is also deeper than investing money. This is investing time, energy, and love in children and within itself. Ladson-Billings believes that culturally relevant teachers are a part of their community and encourage their students to be as well. In order to be a part of the community, teachers need to be activists in getting their communities to be involved in the growth of its children's education. Teachers should also believe that every student can succeed. Teachers in areas like College Park and Compton should believe in their students just as much as they would any student from the Upper West Side of New York City. In this scene, the teacher has her student stand on a line, hold hands, and step forward whenever she said something that pertained to them. She did this to get her students to connect with one another. The students where able to see that everyone had a story and they were able to build closer relationships with one another.
