Kristi and Rhiannon:
- We have written a letter about ourselves for our students. We read their reply and then reply to what they have said. This gives us something to talk to them about during the first week to start building relationships.
- On Transition Day (last year) we also ask the students to write down three things they would like their teacher to know about them. This also gives us information about them before we start the year with them.

I embarrass myself early on during Week 1, so that they can see that even as a teacher, I am still susceptible to constructive feedback and even we're not perfect. After this, I have found students to be more willing and open to communicate their issues. I then like to play an icebreaker game called 'Connected', where students throw a ball of wool around the circle, every time a new person has it, they have to tell the class 3 interesting things about themselves. Once everyone has done so, we must untangle the web back into the original ball of wool (problem solving).
