- We have written a letter about ourselves for our students. We read their reply and then reply to what they have said. This gives us something to talk to them about during the first week to start building relationships. 
- On Transition Day (last year) we also ask the students to write down three things they would like their teacher to know about them. After this, I have found students to be more willing and open to communicate their issues. I then like to play an icebreaker game called 'Connected', where students throw a ball of wool around the circle, every time a new person has it, they have to tell the class 3 interesting things about themselves.
