Graphic Organizers

I have supplemented the personal narrative writing with graphic organizers for sequencing the events. This supported students with getting their ideas down, before starting to construct their narratives.

Students have increased the volume of writing that they do compared with other years, given all of the writing tasks within the lessons. It seems that writing has more weight in this unit.

Collaborative group work - when an activity is long or involves a lot of writing, sometimes I have groups collaborate and work in a single space, share the writing, or even do it orally.

I need support for my students to feel confident doing the "thinking while reading" activities. They get really stuck when asked to do this. I also find it very hard to do every activity in the time given.

The writing that is presented in the lessons, students need more time to generate an idea and then get it started. With that being said, there is usually not enough time to do all the activities.

I have allowed students to go back and add more to previous entries during the writing time, if they are struggling to respond to the prompts at hand. I have also given them alternative prompts, which has allowed them more creativity.

Students enjoyed learning about the Maya, Aztec and Inca. They found the information to be engaging, especially learning about some of their traditions such as making sacrifices to the gods.

Unit 3 (Poetry) Lesson 3

Students are eager to write poetry. They enjoyed writing the apostrophe poem.

Poetry Journal - there is not enough room for their poems. SPED students especially need more space and organizers for their work. Other - Students need to work in citing the text when they respond and extending their answers.
