It is a stimulant that can be used for medicinal purposes, but it is extremely addictive and is only prescribed by a doctor in low doses.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, meth changes the brain’s chemistry by blocking dopamine in the brain. When someone uses meth, the drug enters the brain and releases huge amounts of dopamine, causing an extreme high (euphoria).

Chronic meth use can cause functional and structural changes to the brain, especially to the areas that deal with memory and emotion. It can also cause molecular and chemical changes in the brain, which can be reversed after an extended period of abstinence from the drug.

As a popularly abused substance, meth has accumulated a number of names. Some nicknames like “speed” and “crank” have become a part of our colloquial parlance, while others remain much more obscure, perhaps intentionally.

Desired effects of user

At low dosage it may make the user feel better, however, at any higher of a dose it produces an extreme euphoric feeling.

Tweaking is very uncomfortable, and the abuser often takes a depressant to ease the bad feelings. The most popular depressant is alcohol, with heroin a close second.
Tweaking is the most dangerous stage of methamphetamine abuse cycle to law enforcement officers and other individuals near the abuser. If the abuser is using alcohol to ease the discomfort, the threat the law enforcement officers intensifies.
