In an effort to make his story about the whole of Columbia instead of just one small town, Marquez never gives the town a name. Even though the plot of his book was based on real life events in Sucre, Marquez left out it's name in an effort to minimize distractions. His use of synecdoche in the book is visible in his portrayal of the culture, loosely regulated and only barely becoming industrialized. Machismo is shown through the ways of men in the town. Mainly, how they treated women when it comes to marriage, social standards, and honor. Santiago's mother even says that, "Honor is love" (97). To be honest, I don't have a clue what that means. I don't really understand the idea of honor in the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold. It even says in the novel that if Angela Vicario actually lost her virginity to Santiago Nasar, they have to marry in order for Angela to get her honor back. We don't even know if Angela losing her virginity was consentual. The region of Columbia where the story is set is politically unstable. Pedro Vicario is the unfortunate victim of this instability. Having earned his Sargeant's stripes in the Army, Pedro lead "his patrol into guerella territory, never to be seen again" (83). The political instability leads to a general lack of disrespect for the rule of law. but these people are far from lawless. They follow to a tee a set of moral codes that are unspokenly agreed upon by the entire population. These moral codes are the backbone of the society in "Chronicle of a Death Foretold." Thus the Vicario brothers send two knives into Santiago Nasar's body.
