I chose to research the topic of single gender classrooms because it is newer and increasingly popular topic. I became interested in this topic when we looked at it all together in class and it seemed very different than our school. The main reason I chose this topic was because I wanted to see if single gender schools were better than co-ed in the terms of a students future.

Key Information-Paragraph 1-Why are Schools Switching to Single Gender Schools?

Single Gender Classrooms have been increasing in popularity from the years 1995 to 2006 when the number of schools in the US with single gender classroom programs went from 3 to 241. Schools are trying out this program to try to increase the participation of their students in different subjects, girls in math and science (masculine subjects) and boys in language arts (feminine subject). In 1999 Jefferson Leadership Academies became the first public school in the US to have all of their class turned into single gender classrooms. They decided to switch their classrooms up when they noticed girls did better in math and science when they worked with only girls. But in recent years schools have also gotten rid of their single gender classrooms because of claims of the classes making students follow stereotypes. Schools in Madison, Wisconsin, Boston, and Pittsburgh have changed their programs back to co-ed. Students are being taught they can only act, do and read certain things because of their gender.

Key Information-Paragraph 2- Are There Increases in Single Gender Classroom Student's Grades?

In the research of single gender classrooms there are not many numbers and stats showing a large increase of students grades. But teachers say that their students are doing better in the classroom with only their gender. An 8th grade math class in Tomah Middle School in Wisconsin taught by Lisa Roose decided to split up her class into 2, one with all girls and one with all boys. She decided to do this for a project to see how her students grades and behavior would change. Once splitting the class she noticed and her students have said they have more focus because the opposite gender is not there to distract them. One study has shown that there is some actual change in students grades, an Australian study found that 270,000 male and female students in SGC's scored higher on standardized tests than they did in co-ed. Back to Jefferson Leadership Academies, they threw out their SGC program in 2007 when they saw no change in their students grades and scheduling difficulties.

Professor Robin Robertson said she could tell if her girl students went to all girl school compared to the ones who didn't because they had their hands raised constantly, and they expected Robertson to care about their opinion. Lisa Roose, the 8th grade math teacher at Tomah Middle School also said her students have had increased participation and less behavioral problems. Alike all of the other arguments there is also a side that says that SGC's are hurting students emotionally, making them read or learn how girl/boys would, not how they actually best learn.

Many researchers and writers have called single gender classrooms "a return to segregation that reinforces stereotypes." The thing is that is only one of the viewpoints of SGC's saying that they should not be allowed. But because of the ruling in the case of the United States vs. the male only college, Virginia Military Institute Single Gender Classrooms were considered legal only if they had the same materials for both the boy and girl classrooms. SGC's were still not looked upon as 100% legal until the No Child Left Behind Act was passed in 2006. It stated that SGC's could only be a thing if they were voluntary for students.

What I Learned, How This Impacts Others.

Overall what I learned is that all students are different, they all learn differently. Students cannot be forced to learn a certain way otherwise their whole education will be destructive for their future. SGC's are helpful for some students but for other they are not. Students can have better focus and participation but they can also be turned into robots that only learn one way or not at all. The research I have done could impact others greatly by showing them also how all students learn in their own ways, and if they have kids in school, they could take them to a school with a SGC program if they feel it will help their student succeed.
