Age of Exploration and Age of Colonization

Topic:

In class we were assigned a project for this unit, we had to complete a newsletter about how people explore and colonized in new places. We had to write about how an explorer was able to sail across the ocean to discover more land with resources.

Reflection:
Now that I reflect on this unit I now understand it better, the age of exploration helped develop the nations we have today because people discovered the land.

Connection:
When I completed my project about Christopher Columbus I was wondering about how his voyage went and all of the hardships that he had to face. As I was completing the project I was able to take a prior knowledge and apply it to the project along with new information I discovered.

Application to present day:
This applies to the present day because the land that they discovered before is still with us today. We also are able to use some of the knowledge that older explores found and we were able to apply it for when people explore and navigate the world today.

Age of Reason and Age of Revolution

Topic:
In this unit we learned about inventions and how people traded. We completed a small writing piece (It was on padlet but it can be copied). We had to answer the question 'Which Enlightenment philosopher expressed the most democratic ideas?' This was a hard question to answer because we had multiple philosophers to choose from.

Reflection:
When going through this unit I realized how important all of the Enlightenment thinkers were for what we know today. They played a huge role in helping us form our country and get along right.

Connection:
When I had to answer the question I made my choice by thinking about there ideas and if they were recognized or if people used them.
Application to present day:
We still use the thoughts of many enlightenment thinkers today and we apply it to our government and everyday use.

Gilded Age and World War I

Topic:
In this unit we learned about the important role companies played in manufacturing goods for people. We learned that child labor was being used and people had to work in harsh conditions. We completed a poster using this website called 'Smore' it was all about child labor
Reflection:
Going through this unit I relized that many families back than had there children to go to work even if they did not get paid a lot of money. When doing this smore project I noticed that there are many health and saftey risk in the children's lives.
Connection:
In ELA we read a book called Lyddie. It was about a girl who had to travel to different jobs to earn money to care for her family. I connected this to what we were learning in Social Studies and this deepen my understanding to what child labor was really doing.
Application to present day:
Child labor is still common in some parts of the world where families need to make more money but In America there is laws against child labor and even safety and health conditions.
