Robin Hood is a widely known tale that is shown through a variety of books, movies, video games and other things that we typically see in our daily lives such as social media. Although his name was used as far back as 1377, to this date no one has been able to prove that he even existed. Not much of his origin is known and most of his story is just focused his life as an outlaw. Within his more modern tales, he is mostly viewed as a nobleman before becoming an outlaw however, his original stories claim that he was not a nobleman and was just a regular peasant. Robin hood is known for his specific outfit, the all green clothing and the feathered cap. His archery skills are widely known and have even been carried onto other stories such as Brave, when she splits the opponents arrow in half with her own arrow. Through most of the stories Robin Hood is only known as Robin Hood although in older stories he is known as the Robin of Locksley due to him supposedly being born of the village of Locksley. One of the most well known tales about Robin Hood being is outlawed involves him killing 15 men with a bow after they denied paying him and then trying to fight him. Although his tale varies, everyone has been impacted by the tale of Robin Hood, even children due to Disney making a movie about him appearing as a fox.

Throughout the years, the story of Robin Hood has been told in many different ways. As children, we all grew up with stories of how Robin Hood would “steal from the rich and give to the poor”. The tale of Robin Hood dates way back to the fourteenth century around the year of 1377 where there were “rhymes” written about him. Robin Hood is associated with two main areas, Barnesdale in South Yorkshire and the Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. There have been many ballads and stories written about him. In these stories, Robin Hood had some very important colleagues that anyone who grew up with these stories as a child, could easily recognize. Robin Hood’s most famous companions are called “The Merry Men” which consists of Little John, Will Scarlet, and the ever-so-mentioned Friar Tuck. Robin Hood also had a female love interest who frequents him on his adventures from time to time called “Maid Marian”. Maid Marian is also occasionally portrayed as a damsel in distress in some ballads and appears in the later ones, as she doesn’t appear much in any of the traditional “Robin Hood Legends”. These stories have been interpreted in various ways such as plays, musicals, films, pantomimes, operas, and even made into songs. Many historians and fans of the legends have theories and speculations on whether or not these stories were written about an actual man. Many believe that Robin Hood, in fact was a real man in history that stole from the upper class and gave his bounty for the day to the lower class patrons who were less off and need certain things to survive like, bread/food, produce, or medicine.

Robin’s face wasn’t seen clear but didn’t need to be seen at all for him to be known the most famous English outlaw of all time. Though Robin committed bad acts he did bad things for the good, for example he would lure you into his home he and his lieutenant little John, have a feast but later set you up under the spotlight and the only thing to do under the spotlight is tell the truth because if you lie you may be robbed and all of your money will go to those who need it. Robin stole from the rich and gave to the poor so his only targets were those of wealth or corruption. Robin weapon was a bow and arrow as he is known as a champion archer once he beats a tough opponent in a contest and also received a gold and silver tip arrow. Robin was loved by alot of people but still got into a lot of fight and lost alot of them. When Robin would lose he fight he would often try to recruit the opponent into his band. Robin was a outlaw and what outlawed him was when he was stopped by 15 surely foresters who mocked him because he was young. Robin wagered 20 marks and when he hit his target the foresters refused to pay up and was going to beat up Robin. That didn’t go as well as they may have wanted being that Robin killed all 15 of them.

Robin Hood
Historically Robin Hood has been known as an unlikely hero to steal from the rich and give to the poor. The ballads (poem like pieces of literature composed of short stanzas) were originally wrote created in the 14th century. The stories often revolved of Robin Hood and his accomplices killing people of authority. One foe that often came up in the stories was the the sheriff of Nottinghamshire although it has been argued that a lot of the ballads took place in south Yorkshire. These writings were often very gorey. They often showed the inescapable horrors that took place in medieval Europe. Unfortunately scholar after scholar has failed to turn up factual evidence that go to prove the existence of a legitimate Robin Hood that lived in Great Britain during the 12th to 13th century.
The uncertainty of Robin Hood really appeals to me. The fact that multiple people often try to look for real life vigilantes cause me to be interested. Not only does the fact the that Robin Hood was a legend of English people during the King John era but the reason the legend was created was for people of the peasant class. The thought of a person to steal from the upper class and give to the lower class was really uplifting to the people of the lower class. Being able to hear stories and watch plays of a person hunting forbidden forests and killing corrupt law enforcement appealed to the common people.

In these articles there are many new things I have learned about Robin Hood. The first thing that interests me is how the story itself was never able to be proven that Robin Hood actually existing. I did not know that he is known for dressing in green, for being a skillful archer and for robbing the rich to give to the poor. Robin Hood sounds like a good character for giving the poor money, but stealing from people who are rich isn't the best way to provide it. The story was actually based on a real person even though no one knows who that person is. Robin had lived in the 11th and 12th centuries, and there has been many claims that if Robin Hood was a real person, there is a grave at Kirklees Priory in Yorkshire said to be his. Legend says that when he was dying, Robin fired an arrow, asking to be buried where it landed. Another interesting fact is that Robin Hood has been portrayed in over 100 films and many books, he has been played by various actors like Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner, and Sean Connery, and portrayed as a fox in the Disney cartoon. Something that has also caught my attention was Nottinghamshire is promoted as ‘Robin Hood County’, and there are hundreds of places named after the outlaw. Robin is said to have hidden from his enemies in the Major Oak tree in Sherwood Forest. The huge tree measures about 30 metres around and is almost 1,000 years old. Thats crazy to believe a tree surviving for about 1,000 years, I find it really interesting.

Previous

Next

Robin Hood was one of the cultures most popular heroes. Even though he did some bad things he was a hero in certain type of way. Basically what he was doing and was taking from rich and giving it to the poor for the people that couldn’t afford the stuff they wanted. He also appeared as an anti establishment rebel that murdered government agents and wealthy landowners. People also want for sure if he really existed outside of the verses of ballads and pages of books. Most people loved Robin Hood any one was allowed to hunt him. They say that the sheriff would pay for Robins capture but also Robin is an outlaw as well. That mean he lived outside the protection of law meaning that he is basically allowed to do whatever he wants. But he is not a common criminal as people say he robs from the rich and give to the poor. The poor had little to fear from him and the rich is his enemies and they fear him. Sometimes he fights for the saxons. They are people known as English for the time they lived under the cruel domination of the Norman. The reason he fought for them is so that the Norman and Saxon’s can live together in peace. Even though he done bad things he is usually a strong supporter of the rightful king. He really go all out for them if the King is Richard and Lionheart. Also he is devoted to Virgin Mary.

One interesting fact I have found so far is that nobody could prove that Robin hood even existed. Robin hood never followed the law, he always hunted things he should not have. But he still did good things, such as If he asked you if you had money and you told the truth he would let you go. But if you lied he would steal your money and help others with it. Even though he fought for england he still had people who did not like him. The sheriff would have paid for his capture. Yet he lives outside the protection of the law he still is his own law. He also supports the rightful king. During one of his tournaments he shot his arrow straight down his opponents split the arrow, then took first place. Another one of the special things about him is that he is a good swordsman, also good with a quarterstaff. Robin hood also had kids. His cousin was the Prioress of Kirklees. He needed medical help from his cousin but he betrayed him so he drained too much of his blood away. But he did not die he called his men to help him. Some people believe that the day he died his spirit never did, they are convinced he is still living on. A interesting piece of evidence they had found was a roll that recorded Robert Hod Fugitive. Throughout all the facts and things they have found, they still have very much to find on the topic.

Robin hood started in the med evil times, by 1370’s he was a well known. The evidence is record in historic records. The closest they came to robin hood was robert hode. Robert hode was a outlaw he was also the closes to be robert hood but there was many more that could been him. A gang of males took his name Robin hood to their advantage by knowing the past of the real robin hood of being an outlaw stealing, they continued that. But that not the only legend that was told. It was also know that robin hood was a nobleman. The king at this time was Henry II and many people hated the king at the time. So they saw robin hood as a helped because he stole from the rich to give to the poor. By stealing from the rich Robin hood and his man lived in the woods to hind from the sheriff . many people visited his tree as respect. The reason why robin hood searched was because he had hit king henry the II guard and one of his deer. Robin hoods crew was called merry meaning outlaw gang. Also in the reading they talk about little john. Apparently John was his brother that become a king that was cruel and arrogant to the england people. He may the people pay high taxes to king john many people died of hungry. So robin hood was noble as a royal but maybe he was going around trying to help the people that his brother was hurting. That why it gain a bad name to the rich people.

Most legends or stories originated with a real life person who did legend worthy things, but Robin Hood didn’t. It has never been proven to be real or based in fact. This is a departure from the normal formula for legends and passed down stories. Anthropologically this is an anomaly and it contributes to our knowledge of how legends are formed and passed through generations. He is said to have robbed from the rich and given to the poor and been loyal to the absent King Richard, so if he did exist this would be the reason that there are no records of his existence. Why would the people who are literate write about someone who took their belongings and made their life difficult? He was also born into the class of yeoman, a commoner who cultivates their own land, which would further make any proof of him existing hard to find, if it existed at all. There are historical figures with names similar to his, but their stories do not match up. It is also hypothesized that the name “Robing Hood” was a stock name used by outlaws in place of their real name.

But what had inspired these nicknames a fictional tale which was an infamous bandit or an amalgam and with all of this i find it really interesting because i inspire him for trying to take care of the poor for that because the rich didn't want to do it, but Over the course of 700 years, the outlaw from Nottinghamshire who robs from the rich to give to the poor has emerged as one of the most enduring folk heroes in popular culture–and one of the most versatile. He regularly fought against his enemy, the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robin Hood has been proven to be one of the popular cultures most enduring folk heroes and they have said that Robin is a Aristocrat with a heart or gold and a love interest with Maid Marian. Over the course of 700 years, the outlaw from Nottinghamshire who robs from the rich to give the poor has emerged as one of the most enduring folk heroes in popular culture and one of the most versatile. During the mid 15th century he was known as a legend, Robin appeared as an anti-establishment rebel who murders government agents and wealthy landowners. The first literary references to Robin Hood appear in a series of 14th and 15th century ballads about a violent freeholder who lived in Sherwood forest with his men and frequently clashed with the Sheriff of Nottingham. Medieval chroniclers took for granted that a historical Robin Hood lived and breathed during the 12th or 13th century, We may never know for sure whether Robin Hood ever existed outside the verses of ballads and pages of book and even if we did Fans young and old would still go to the Englands Nottinghamshire region for a tour. Rather than a peasant, knight or fallen noble as in later versions, the protagonist of these medieval stories is a commoner which is a ordinary person without Rank or title.

Legend says that Robin Hood was a skilled swordsman & was a well known figure in the Middle Ages, he’s also the earliest known figure from the 15th century. According to this man known as “Robin Hood”, he does have some interesting facts about himself that no one often talks about or even knows. Starting off, no one has even proved scientifically that this man has once existed, or that he has even existed at all. Researchers have tried for many centuries to pin down the identity of Robin Hood, an increasing number of historians hold stories about Robin and his “merry men” simply being myths that came across as popular fables.

The second most weird fact from this list is the fact that nearly all that is known about the legend, is found in only five of the earliest surviving ballads and part of a play. This also doesn’t do any justice towards trying to bring truth to the question, “so is he real or not”? In my opinion, I don’t think Robin Hood in this case could be real simply because, scientists have not found enough evidence to prove he is real, but how has he came so far from history if he wasn’t? I mean, we’re talking about the 15th century. Is Robin Hood really an important piece to folklore that we the people don’t want to admit he isn’t real? In this case, history will continue to take its course, and maybe one day we’ll get the truth literature/history has been waiting for.

The only thing that really stood out to me was that Robin Hood’s existence cannot be proven. Throughout all 18 years of my life Robin Hood has always been a tale told by my elders. The story is about a outlaw hero who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. In my case, my family loved it because we were always poor until recently. However, my parents would talk to me about how just because some people do bad things, doesn’t mean that they are a bad person. Which is what i believe the story Robin Hood was all about. He meant well because he believed that the rich had enough expensive things. He wanted to give to the poor. Many people to this day, use the same operation as this outlaw. He basically started a tradition. However, I am not saying that he was the first person to do this kind of thing. He just happened to go down in history for it. I believe that he was a real person. Someone who was relatively close to him could have began to tell his story. It could have been different than how that person told it. If you have ever played that game telephone, you’ll understand that words get continuously switched around. Something could have been said to prove that he was a real person who actually did these things. It could have been left out while playing the telephone game for hundreds of years. In my opinion, Robin Hood was a real person but he could not be here to tell his stories so someone else passed them along.

Most people love Robin Hood, he’s a outlaw. Robin is the law unto himself. He is the self-styled king of either Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire or Barnsdale in Yorkshire. Robin Hood is no common criminal, he robs from the rich and gives to the poor. The poor have little fear but his enemies are rich and corrupt. He sometimes fights for the Saxons, they are known as the English who lived under the cruel Normans. Although Robin Hood was a outlaw, he is a strong supporter of the rightful king who was Richard the Lionheart. But Robin will fight Richard’s brother, John. Robin is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Some other stories about he is the son of a forest god Herne the Hunter. Robin Hood is a champion archer. When he snuck into a Nottingham archery tournament, he won the tough contest. He’s also a good swordsman and handy with the quarterstaff. Surprisingly, he actually loses a lot of fights. Robin usually meets a stranger, Robin picks a fight. The stranger often fights Robin Hood to a standhill or even overpowers him. Then Robin asks the stranger to join his band. In many stories said that Robin Hood was in 1160 A.D. in the village of Locksley or Loxley, which is sometimes in Yorkshire and other times in Nottinghamshire.

He was someone that stole from the rich and gave it back to the poor. He was good with a bow and could disguising himself to hide from who ever he needed to. He didn't believe in the law or in letting the poor suffer so he decided to do something about it. He was one of the most popular folk heroes for over 700 years even until this day everyone should know the story of robin hood. Ever since robin hood´s story began there have been many filmmakers and other entertainers they have changed up the story each time. In the 14th century in english rood hood was a rebel that fought the feudal system, he kills government agents and wealthy landowners. And in others he is a loving person with a heart of gold. Although no one could prove if robin hood was real in the 13th century they made robehod and other names inspired by robin hood, became names for some criminals and they say that what could have inspired the names were either from the fiction tale or from the actual infamous criminal.

The name first became popular by a group who would steal. In the 1970’s people who stole were always called Robin Hoods. When Robin Hood became one identity stories began to form about a man named Robin Hood. The story of Robin hood is about a man who would steal from the rich to give to the poor. The story of Robin Hood has over 100 different stories and films. In one particular film Robin has a love interest. His love interest goes by the name of Maid Marian. Maid Marian was Robin Hood's girlfriend who would help him on his journey and help the poor whenever their in need. The earliest legends of his story are found in the five earliest ballads and part of a play. The only thing different about the ballads are that Maid Marian isn’t in any of them. Friar Tuck was mentioned in Robin Hood and the Sheriff. Only one out of five of the merry men are given a name in one of the early ballads. Sherr wood is only named in one ballad. In the plays of Robin Hood he and his merry men are the reason for poor peoples happiness. Even though there are many stories his stories have never been proven to be true. There are no reports in history of a “Robin Hood and his Merry Men”.

Kimori Harris
5/08/18
English 4
There are a lot of different Red Robin in house stories outhere. Story tellers out here. Storytellers continues to add stories and news characters to the legends . Earlier Robin was not a nobleman. Beginning in the 15 century and perhaps even earlier , christian revelers in certain parts of england celebrated May day with plays and games involving a Robin hood ever existed outside the verses of ballads and pages of books. 14-15 century ballads about a violent year man who lived in Sherwood forest with his men frequently clashed with the sheriff of Nottingham. In the 19 century , writers illustrators like howards pyle adapted the traditional tales for children , popularizing them in the united states . Bringing robin to the silver screen has a screen has became a rite of passage for directors ranging from Michael curtiz and Ridley scott to Terry Gilliam and Mel Brooks. In 14th century England, where agrarian discontent had began to chip away at the feudal system, he appears as an anti-establishment rebel who murders government agents and wealthy landowners. Later variations from times of less social upheaval dispense with the gore and cast Robin as a dispossessed aristocrat with a heart of gold and a love interest, Maid Marian. While most contemporary scholars have failed to turn up solid clues, medieval chroniclers took for granted that a historical Robin Hood lived and breathed during the 12th and 13th century. What we do know is that the notion of a brave rebel who lives on the outskirts of society, fighting injustice and oppression with his band of companions,

He was a vigilante that stole from the rich and gave to the poor, his story was known for over 700 years, people were probably still stealing from the rich and giving to the poor long after the original mans death, and posed as the man himself, as if their were generations of the man. I find it interesting that he reminds me of one of my favorites shows, “The Arrow”.

He and his Merry men were known as one class above peasants called Yeomen, which is also one step below a knight/squire. Robin Hood was also very skilled with a bow, and he could disguise himself whenever he needed to, to stay out of sight and remain hidden for long periods of time. No one knew who he really was, and no one knew if he even actually exists, almost as if he was a ghost.

Andrew Nguyen

Borton

English 4

08 May 2018

Padlock

Robin Hood is a part myth and part legend. They never found out if Robin Hood existed from being in books and ballads. Robin Hood is a folk tale because over the course of seven hundred years there was an outlaw that robs the rich and hands it out to the poor. There is no evidence that there is a real Robin Hood, they tried to prove it but only had references to the books or ballads. Robin Hood treated the poor, women, and people of humble with courtesy. Robin Hood has a little temper because he assaulted Little John who had beat him in an archery competition. People viewed Robin Hood as an aristocrat because he was presented as a noble who was wrongfully dispossessed of his land. He is also a role model for Victorian philanthropist. He also had hatred of the Sheriff and his verderers who enforced the oppressive forest laws. Robin Hood asked Little John to shoot an arrow into a field and wherever the arrow lands, that is where he wanted to be buried. Robin Hood is more violent than what people have expected than he is. Robin Hood decapitates a guy a put it on his bow. He decapitated the sheriff and a villainous monk. Robin Hoods story was told throughout the middle ages and early modern periods. The legend where Robin Hood is from in Sherwood Forest, north from Nottingham which is in London.
