On a literal level, Friar Laurence refelects the influence of religion in the 16 century. Ironically, Friar Laurence goes against his principles by marrying Romeo and Juliet without their parents consent. Furthermore, he supplies a young girl with poison to fake her death. On a dramatic level, Shakespeare includes a character like Friar Laurence to demonstrate the equalinrium of the play and put emphasis on Friar Laurence who is placed in the middle of both families, as he as the power to bring both conflicting families together through marriage.
