I think that space science can help breaking barriers, the idea of viewing Earth from a different point of view itself helps seeing everything from a different prospective, seeing how our point of view is just our point of view. This is a big lesson of tolerance itself. Things that are big here are irrelevant outside in the space. In my opinion everybody has a point, but in real life the broblem is the family environment. Parents have a strong influence on their children, of the way they think about the others. For example, in my country for many years the man was supposed to work outdoors and the woman should raise her children and do all the housework. Nowadays the role models have changed. More and more women go to universities and further education, but when it comes to family they find it difficult to manage with both: job and raising children. Where I'm getting to is, when it comes to my students,
I realize from their experience, that inspite that we teachers make a great effort to stop them from beeing racists and to make them accept divercity as something posetive in their life, at the end we get disappointed. When children get out of the classroom they react as they were used to at home. So I think that through Space Sience we could help them understand that both men and women, dispite their nationality or culture have equal oppurtunities in life.

I teach in a mixed gender school with many newcomers to the country in each class. It really enriches classroom activities. The first space video I showed the students was Sunny Williams (female US astronaut) taking a tour of the International Space Station. There was no feeling in the class that it should have been a man. Students are very accepting when given appropriate cues from the teacher

I think that one way we can address, with space sciences, diversity and gender balance is to talk about the History of Science. With this we can understand that scientific and technology advances are not a one man (or woman) job, that these need the involvement of everybody and their race, gender or other characteristics don't influence their contributions to this. There are great examples of female scientists (past and present, the famous ones and the invisible ones) and the great contributions of ancient cultures (arabics, greeks, prehispanics, aboriginals...) to astronomy.

Blindness is a handicap for most activities in the daily life. As I´m teaching, for the fisrt time, a blind girl student, I think a single activity adapted to her circumstances could be great. They have no problems with differencies between girls and boys. The girls always have the same tasks as boys. You maybe smile but the only gender situation met in my activity were...the colors! I think gender stereotypes are socially established and it is important to deconstruct these ideas. When having students that have these stereotypes embedded I propose them a video animation by Bruno Bozzetto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlcaDhRu1AQ) and after ideas are shared on class. It has been a way to overcome this social "habit". After this first approach students work in groups to present peers with a female scientist and her work. Space is still a curious subject to students so usually both genders are involved on the class activities and proposed tasks.

To start with diversity and gender balance in class, we can explain that SPACE is open, it has no barriers and boundaries at all and it also accommodates the widest range of diversity. We should make that our students reflect on this fact.
We also can use some interesting tools from The Journey of ideas (Space Awareness) and show them how the actual knowledgement of Space was and still is building by the contribution of scientifics from different cultures.

I watched these podcasts and they horrified me.

I have been teaching for 25 years and in all that time have ensured that my students' classroom (yes, it it is their learning space!) is an inclusive environment... We do not have a gender differential in my classes.. my young adults (12-19) are individuals regardless of gender, intellect ( whatever you define that as), ability or levels of interest or commitment .. I appreciate that the socio-economic background et cetera of my students is diverse.. but it their minds, not their parent's pockets, that I am engaging with..

I teach in what would be classified as an underprivileged school. Many of our students do face socioeconomic and other problems. I only found this week that the parent of a student of mine believes their child should not bother attending school as they would not amount to much anyways! What hope is there you might utter in a situation like that! But this is where education and the school can be a ray of hope and encouragement. - being able to acknowledge the rapid innovations that occur with particular rapidity in this sector and translate them into daily practice application
- interest in the field of advanced technologies;
- Strong logical and analytical skills;
- Sense of responsibility and organizational skills (planning, distribution of work, meeting deadlines);
- Personal organization skills, determination and decision-making skills;

I told them that the stars means that they could do everything: get rid of diaper, play nice with a colleague or pay attention to teacher. The history of science is an example how people from different countries, different religions with different jobs, even with a different social status or different physical condition contributed to the search of truth.
International space station is also a human victory over to discriminations on gender or skin colour, religions and so on. Teaching with space and astronomy can really help us to realise how meaningless our differences are compared to such a vast universe.

I think that girls and boys are equally interested in science and have the same capacity to understand it. What make the difference in the outcome is the role that a male and a female has in a society.
Stereotype are still strong in our culture. We normally think that a girl will be a mother and therefore she must find a more suitable work for her role. Therefore being a teacher, nurse ... is better than being a doctor, a pilot ...

Scientific and tecnologycal matter at school are still nowadays thouht to belong to male gender, expecially at University. During the past 20 years more and more female students have choose scientific studies at higher education. But a lot has still to be done to change radically and make this trend the reflection of a real change in the society. It's a challenge for a teacher to make female students really involved in scientific matters.

The vastness and unique beauty of the Universe is based on diversity - and Space Exploration would turn out to be rather boring without it. So, each extraordinary piece of Universe and its research can be used as a metaphor- for diversity in universal laws is what keeps us surprised and eager to learn more all the time.
Also, the fact that space wonders and their research are something all people, of all genders, nationalities and any other differences share and communicate on is a great basis to build on a
perspective capable of broadening the mind and stimulating a sense of global citizenship in pupils.
And of course, through Space, STEM subjects can introduced in more "friendly" ways that ensure girls are involved and evolved as well as boys.

Thoughts about gender balance and diversity

National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is the oldest and most prestigious educational institution of Greece in the field of technology, and has contributed unceasingly to the country's scientific, technical and economic development since its foundation in 1836.Even though a few years ago female students are in the lower percentage of the hole number of students , nowadays numbers have changed. Recently the female students are about 50%. Of course there is a long way to be improved about gender balance(for example about the representation of women in the faculty of the Universities or in other scientific organizations) but it is obvious that the work during the last years about gender diversity gives positive results.

Space science (and generally Math and Physics) can help breaking barriers. Discussing with our students about the scientists that played a role in the history of Space Sciences could again help them realize that there should be no limit associated with our nationality or cultural background. I think that, the idea of viewing Earth from a different point of view itself helps seeing everything from a different prospective, seeing how our point of view is just our point of view. This is a big lesson itself.
