Chris is head over heels in love with Kim and calls John to arrange for him to take time off so he can spend it with her.
Thuy, Kim's cousin, comes.

He is Kim's planned husband, a family-arranged marriage.
Kim, on the other hand, refuses to leave Chris, and Thuy curses the two.

Vietnam is reunified after three years.
Even while the locals are celebrating, the Engineer has yet to receive his visa, and Kim and her two-year-old son are now living in a shanty village.

Thuy has tracked her out and threatened her with retaliation for slandering the family.

Meanwhile, Chris has returned to America with his new wife, Ellen.

He hasn't revealed anything about his past to Ellen.

He has a Vietnamese baby with Kim, who visits a "bui-doi" organization for the repatriation of half-American children in Bangkok.

Chris approaches John, who is adamant about seeing Kim and his child.

Kim travels to the hotel where Chris and Ellen are staying and informs Ellen about the situation in detail.

During the Vietnam War, she was a young orphan forced into prostitution.

Chris
A tormented American G.I. or soldier in his 20s, he is in love with Kim, the prostitute he just screwed.
Still, he finds comfort in a relationship with Ellen in the USA after being separated from Kim in Vietnam, for the war is still far from over.


The Engineer
The owner of Dreamland, the nightclub where Kim ended up working, is a French-Vietnamese.
He's a sleazy wheeler-dealer who prioritizes self-preservation over all else.
He is delighted that one of his girls ended up into a relationship with an American GI because he views this as his ticket to migration to America.
The engineer might sometimes be seen as a personification of the Asian belief that emigrating to the West will ease their poverty, a concept that Kim does not fathom.



Gigi
In reality, Gigi, a Vietnamese bar lady, is more of a vulnerable woman with aspirations for a better life than she lets on because of her tough exterior.
Gigi was the stripper who has crowned Miss Saigon in the Dreamland mini-pageant, but she passed over the crown to Kim.
Only her desire to immigrate to the United States keeps her working in Dreamland.


John
He is Chris's closest confidante and a fellow American soldier.
He is also a Dreamland customer.
To prevent Chris from resigning from his post, he indirectly triggered the second separation between Kim and Chris.
He copes with the war by becoming an activist for the children of American soldiers and Vietnamese women.


Thuy
A youthful, stalwart, and dedicated Vietnamese military leader was Kim's childhood friend and to whom she was engaged before the war.
He ended up achieving a high status in the Communist government that he joined, believing that this would be sufficient to return what he believes is rightly his—that is, nothing could stop him from taking back his betrothed, Kim, for himself.

Tham

The engineer sees the american dream to be the epitome of living, this song also shows him fantasizing about being in america with lines like 'it's time we entertain my American Dream', he continues on fantasizing about the american dream throughout the entirety of the song with lines about the extravagant lifestyles of Americans.

Lines like 'name what you want and it's there', 'spend and have money to spare', 'live like you haven't a care', and 'come and get more than your share' really emphasize on how the engineer envisions the american dream.
