Not long ago, it was not uncommon for the lives of women to be planned and determined by others. For my mother, Cecilia Moreno Saco, a soft spoken young girl born in Santiago, Chile in 1950, unexpectedly became the one to change that course for the women in her family.

Nutgraph:

While Cecilia was born Chilean, she felt Peruvian at heart. "I grew up practically in Peru and learned to live its land, its people an culture." Her family moved to Lima, Peru when she was seven years old for a job opportunity that was presented to her father. Growing up in Lima, as the oldest of three sisters, she was expected to take on the most responsibilities and care for her sisters, while also helping her parents around the home.
