A lot of baroque music is structured and ordered, maybe reflecting the ideals of the age of reason. This period is distinguished by its sophisticated counterpoint's discipline and the harmony's orderly evolution. However, Baroque composers also demonstrated a keen interest in using music to convey feelings or "affections." There is no mistaking the joy, pathos, or passion communicated in many of the most well-known pieces of the time, and the fancies and toccatas demonstrate an expression freedom that has very little to do with rationality. Even the more somber religious compositions frequently attempt to convey a huge sense of grandeur or a mystifying influence.
