This period is distinguished by its sophisticated counterpoint's discipline and the harmony's orderly evolution. However, Baroque composers also demonstrated a keen interest in using music to convey feelings or "affections." There is no mistaking the joy, pathos, or passion communicated in many of the most well-known pieces of the time, and the fancies and toccatas demonstrate an expression freedom that has very little to do with rationality.
