Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match by Monica Brown

Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match is a book about a young girl who is made up of many cultures and races. Marisol is a Peruvian-Scottish-American girl who has flaming red hair with nut-brown skin. Marisol sees nothing wrong with this combination, but her peers seem to think differently. Throughout the book, Marisol faces a lot of challenges with her peers pointing out her differences and putting her down because of it. However, Marisol chooses not to let what others say stop her from embracing her own culture and heritage. Marisol doesn't match as her peers would say, but that is just fine with her.

This text is a transformative window and mirror. It is a mirror for those who feel like they "don't match", for children who come from different backgrounds than the "norm" at their school and struggle with finding their place. It is also a window for children who are part of the "norm" and do not deal with these types of challenges daily. This book will help to open those children's eyes to the different backgrounds and heritages we all come from and to be more accepting of others and of their differences.

He spends the beginning of his journey in the city as a homeless man just trying to find means to get by. Life was difficult for Denver, but one day God changes that for him- by placing a couple of "different" people in his life who show him what love and life is really about.

This book is transformative because it teaches children about the diversity and struggles that people face everyday with not having money to meet needs.
