The Military Act of reconstruction was a law passed by the Radical Republicans that divided the South into five military districts. The Military Act was enacted because with this Act new elections were held with only approved voters. The state were asked to ratify the 14th and 15th Amendments which could only be done after new authorities were elected so the new voters led to republican control of the democratic south. After this the southerns split up.

This item was included in the exhibit because, this changed the southerns point of view on all of the new people who got elected.

Life has Changed so much in the past couple years. I used to wake up, go and work in the fields for my owner, eat a meal, then go to bed every night and every morning of my life up until the 13th Amendment but it was not until the 14th and 15th amendment that I finally felt like I was living for at least a small purpose. The 14th Amendment allowed me to be considered an American. I became a sharecropper which isn't significantly different than my old life but a whole lot better. Once the Freedmen's Bureau happened I became healthy and educated somewhat, and now my family and I live in a small house on a few acres that I attend, to to earn money and to earn my right to live there. But once the 15th Amendment passed I was allowed to vote which really switched up my world because all of my people had a upper hand on who we thought should become elected and who we thought would help my us politically. But for now I'm still living life as a sharecropper.

This item was included in the exhibit because, this is view from a different perspective from most that shows us what others felt when this was all happening and how everyone else thought.

Abraham Lincoln was a great man who wanted equality for everyone he was also a great man politically. Although Lincoln was on both the radical republican side and the other side he was doing what he thought was right. He helped both sides to find an agreement. He announced the ten percent plan and after that four states moved to readmission to the Union.

Reconstruction was a failure because that time didn't unite everyone like the united states was supposed to it brought everyone farther away from each other than they were already. Reconstruction showed everyone who believed in what and showed people that others do not think of some as equal as they are.
