         <title>History of Vanadium</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The founder of Vanadium is Andrés Manuel del Río, a Spanish-Mexican scientist that found vanadium at 1801. He sent samples of a vanadium ore and a letter describing his methods to the Institute de France in Paris, France, for analysis and confirmation. Unfortunately, his letter was lost in a shipwreck and the Institute only received his samples, which contained a brief note describing little about this new element, which Rio had named erythronium, that resembled chromium.  Vanadium was rediscovered by Nils Gabriel Sefstrôm, a Swedish chemist, in 1830 while analyzing samples of iron from a mine in Sweden. Vanadium was also named by Nils Gabriel Sefstrôm.<br>Andrés Manuel del Río:</div>]]></description>

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that 35 mg/m3 of vanadium be considered immediately dangerous to life and health, and is likely to cause permanent health problems or even death. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Originally mined to be used to help create a strong steel alloy, vanadium has the potential to be used for batteries– the kind to store energy from the sun. Batteries made with vanadium can be used to store up large amounts of energy which can then be released at times when most needed. These batteries can be recharged about 20,000 times. Their competition, currently, includes lithium batteries, which can only handle between 1,000 and 2,000 recharges before dying out. Also, lithium batteries aren’t able to store, for example, a whole community’s energy needs for several hours, while vanadium batteries can.&nbsp;<br>This is solving home problems in Hawaii when they are gaining too much sunshine then their electric grid can hold. Because of this, the cost of electricity in Hawaii is 3 times more expensive then in the inner US. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Vanadium is likely safe if used in adults, if less than 1.8 mg per day is taken. At higher doses, such as those used to treat diabetes, vanadium frequently causes unwanted side effects including abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and gas. It can also cause a greenish tongue, loss of energy, and problems with the nervous system.<br>Vanadium is unsafe when used in large amounts and for a long time. This increases the risk of serious side effects including kidney damage.<br>Vanadium will lower blood sugar. People with diabetes should check their blood sugar carefully and watch for signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).<br>Vanadium is likely safe when used for in children when taken in amounts found in foods. Don't give children supplements. Not enough is known about the safety of these larger doses in children.</div>]]></description>
