         <description><![CDATA[<div>March 1964, Kitty Genovese was fatally stabbed in the suburbs of New York City.<br>She was attacked twice with 38 witnesses present at the time of 3:00am - and the police were not called until 3:50am.<br><br>The death of Kitty Genovese had been of great importance as this had been a fatal stabbing in front of 38 witnesses that stood by and did not help, as this could now be justified as 'Pluralistic Ignorance' - as nobody helped to begin with, so the other bystanders mentally agree to not help.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Lab Research by Latané and Darley</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In a Lab experiment, Lantané and Darley (Columbia University NYC) wanted to test whether the presence of others at an emergency situation had an effect on helping behaviour.<br><br></div><ul><li>As part of a course credit, 72 students (59 female and 13 male) participated in the experiment.</li></ul><div>&nbsp;</div><ul><li>They were asked to discuss what kind of personal problems new college students could have in an urban area.</li></ul><div>&nbsp;</div><ul><li>&nbsp;Each participant sat in a booth alone with a pair of headphones and a microphone. They were told that the discussion took place via an intercom to protect the anonymity of participants.</li></ul><div>&nbsp;</div><ul><li>At one point in the experiment a participant (a confederate) staged a seizure.</li></ul><div>&nbsp;</div><ul><li>The independent variable (IV) of the study was the number of persons (bystanders) that the participant thought listened to the same discussion. The dependant variable (DV) was the time it took for the participant to react from the start of the victim’s fit until the participant contacted the experimenter.</li></ul><div>&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
