When looking through the NSBA website, htey discuss ways to build safer schools through campus culture. School safety is at the forefront of American discourse at this time, and school coun selors have an increasingly important role to play. This article examines the approaches used to address concerns about school safety since the Newtown shooting in 2012. They look at community support, campus initiatives, and extra training regimen.
School counselors are a key factor in school safety in their role in creating school safety plans and implementing programs which aid in creating a campus culture which reduces risk. Counselors are responsible for ensuring schools have systems in place to prevent bullying and campus violence, and to support student revovery after any such instances.

The ASCA spends time talking about legal and ethical responsibilities of school counselors. One that stood out to me was the responsibility of school counselors with regard to students and technology. School technology has given the ability to check whether students are seeking potentially dangerous material online, and there is an inherent responsibility to establish how that is used. With not every district having access to the sae guidelines or technology the waters can appear murky at best.

Districts have access to varying technology capabilties, meaning some districts are more able to prevent searches for harmful materials. FUrther, this ability allows the shcools to react to any violations of that policy, so long as the sagfeguards which exist are used properly.
Each district needs access to the same technology, and the same rules need to apply governing its use and tracking. This will help create a system in which schools will take appropriate actions, building trust in schools.

Summary and Reflection

Social media is getting to be as natural to students as the air they breathe, but it comes with aseries of risks to the student and the school culture as whole. The goal is to teach students to use social media constructively, rather than as another means by which to bully students orseek avenues of self harm. Many students do not have strong supervision at home, so it is ever more important to teach them to self regulate, as they are spending increasing time looking at a screen. Additionally, schools are being brought in to mediate issues that occur outside of school, but play out online (Junco, 2014).
The rise of social and school media has lead to a discussion about the right to privacy of students using school technology. Spurring this discussion is the lack of information about what data is tracked and how it is used to benefit the students (Armerding, 2014). While it is important to keep students safe, parents fear that schools are becoming a 'big brother' to their children, wile expecting administrators to deal with issues that occur in off campus hours. The blurring of these lines has caused tension, but opens the door for a meaningful discussion of the place of the schools in the digital community (Armerding, 2014).
Some districts have methods by which to track search terms whicha re flagged, with the option to send alerts to the appropriate administrators. (Junco, 2014) The issue that arises is when do these alerts become the responsibility of the staff? Secondly, what is the process for responding to these alerts, and what qualifies as approriate? Conversations need to be had at the community level to determine the roles of schools in preventing tragedy outside of their walls. For years, schools hae sought to insulate themselves from the outside community, now it is time to detemine if a more active role is needed.
