Communication is the most frequently used term associated with collaboration in the professional field. When asked, "What characteristics are important for (collaboration, co-teaching, and consultation) to occur?" the answer was effective, clear communication. In order to successfully share ideas and work together, educators and different professionals need to be on the same page and have a mutual understanding. Communication skills was also listed as a common skill necessary for collaboration to occur. Educators need the appropriate skills to express their opinions and ideas to others professionally while being sensitive to others' feelings. If there is a disagreement, professionals should agree to disagree.
Open communication allows for trust and reduces any unnecessary misunderstanding. Everyone should be on the same page. Educators may come across difficult students and may need feedback or problem-solving strategies- this is where communication with colleagues is necessary. Two interviewees noted that communication among co-teachers is also essential in order to ensure for consistency. Consistency in terms of classroom rules, discipline, lesson plans, etc. are all topics that should be communicated among co-teachers and colleagues. Co-teachers are there to support one another and work off one another.

Listening, Open-mindedness & Flexibility

Listening and the ability to be open-minded are necessary skills for all professionals. An interviewee stated that it is important for educators to "step outside of their comfort zone" and try something new and different. All educators bring something unique to the table and the willingness to be open to change and utilize different teaching strategies is a step in the right direction. Flexibility was also a common pattern among collaborative practices. Not everything can go as planned or the way you want it to, it is important to be flexible and do things differently. For a teacher, no two days are alike. Things happen, things go wrong. Sometimes, we have to think and work on the spot and "go with the flow" which involves being flexible and understanding that it is perfectly fine to step outside of the box. Effective communication also involves listening to others and taking ideas in. A colleague may see things from a different perspective that may be useful, so it important to listen. Active listening helps to develop a stronger sense of communication.
