In the beginning we see the strained relationship between the humans and the "Prawns". We see the humans and the aliens live fragmented within their society where the aliens - who have be alienated - begin to socialise into the criminalised, negative aspects of the society. In the film we learn that the humans felt it was "their land" in which the aliens were invading and disrupting their "peace and harmony". After researching the BNP's attitudes towards immigrations, Britain also felt that immigration disrupted their own futures and reduced their opportunities in society.

Can you think of occasions today where this happens- by ourselves as individuals, by communities, by the media...?

When we label a group of people as 'other' it distances them from us, dehumanises them and makes it easier for us to dehumanise them. This leads to a lack of empathy for the 'other' group that makes it easier to mistreat them and not show them the same respect we would our friends or family. In this film the humans are the ruling class, therefore they have this mentality that they can experiment on the 'prawns' and use them life they aren't living creatures. This means that the 'prawns' would start to believe in the same mindset as the humans and would think it futile to retaliate since they are on the human's land. However because of how the humans have treated them they have a more criminalised image. During the first opening minutes of the movie when the aliens, also referred to as prawns, arrive they are alienated from the rest of society. They are also treated in a oppressive and belittling way from the humans.
 
 The humans would use terms such as 'Prawns' when speaking or talking about the aliens. This just helped reinforce their authority and power over the aliens. These negative remarks would cause the aliens to eventually have negative views on the humans and cause acts of rebellion and violence when forced to move from their homes.
