         <description><![CDATA[<div>Kevin Henkes is an American <a href="https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/literature-for-children/353391">children’s book</a> author and illustrator. His books have won many awards, including the <a href="https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/literature-for-children/353391#253720-toc">Caldecott Medal</a> for</div><div>&nbsp;<em>Kitten’s First Full Moon</em> (2004).</div><div>Kevin Henkes was born in 1960 in Racine, Wisconsin.</div><div>He decided he wanted to write and illustrate children’s books&nbsp;</div><div>when he was in high school. After his first year in college,&nbsp;</div><div>he traveled to&nbsp; <a href="https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/New-York-City/353530">New York City</a> to find a publisher.&nbsp;</div><div>He was successful.&nbsp; <em>All Alone</em> (1981), his first book,&nbsp;</div><div>was soon published. Henkes became known for his&nbsp;</div><div>stories that revolve around a group of mice. The first mouse&nbsp;</div><div>story was <em>A Weekend with Wendell</em>(1986). A full cast of&nbsp;</div><div>mouse characters later appeared in <em>Julius, the Baby of the&nbsp;</em></div><div><em>World</em> (1990), <em>Chester’s Way</em> (1988), and others. <em>Lilly’s Purple</em></div><div><em>&nbsp;Plastic Purse</em> (1996) is one of Henkes’s most popular mouse</div><div>&nbsp;titles. Another, <em>Owen</em> (1993), was a Caldecott Honor Book.</div><div>Henkes also wrote chapter books. <em>Words of Stone</em> (1992) features a boy whose summer takes an unexpected turn. <em>Olive’s Ocean</em>(2003) is about a girl who learns life lessons from her grandmother. <em>Olive’s Ocean</em> was named a Newbery Honor Book.</div>]]></description>
