The Dakota Pipeline is a $3.7 billion project that will carry 470,000 barrels of oil from the western fields of North Dakota to Illinois. Between these fields lies ancestral lands. This project will become a threat culturally and environmentally, especially to the native americans living there!

The pipeline will begin in North Dakota going through South Dakota, following Iowa will flow into the oil tank from Illinois. In North Dakota there are many native tribes such as the Sioux and Meskwaki. Not only are Native tribes being affected by this in North Dakota, but also in Iowa. The pipeline crosses private land and water crossings.

It was said that the Pipeline will bring an estimated total of $156 millions in sale and be have a lot of jobs to offer. As much as 8,000 to 12,000 new jobs. Also it was said that the pipelines will be a cheaper than being transported & will have a lower carbon footprint than having trains and trucks. Meaning there wont be any reliance on foreign oil.

Who is it impacting

The pipeline will economically benefit the people who are in charge of the project... They will make lots of money from the oil. It also impacts people without jobs. There will more jobs given to other. Also we wont have to relay on other countries for their oil. But the people being affected the many indigenous people. Native land is being taken away, this land is sacred to them. They wont have any other place to live. The Dakota Pipeline is breaking a treaty made in !868 saying no loss of land could occur. But the Congress passed the Act of 1877 without tribe approval. This land could be destroyed...The animals will be endangered, the chances of oil leakage is high. Wildlife will have to migrate and find a new home.

Is it a good idea

If you think natural resources are worth more than nature, then yes. But i would have to differ. The pipeline is interfering with indigenous land. We do not have many natives anymore so we should be able to preserve this land as long as possible. Also even if they say this is the most efficient way to get oil, the cost of oil spill will be high. For example In November 17, 210,000 gallons of oil leaked from the Keystone pipeline to the Dakota pipeline. The pipeline crosses 1,172 miles . At some point the pipes will break, just like the treaty they made in 1868. When this pipe breaks it will mess up drinking water and the lives of animals.

Teen advocacy groups have been drawing attention to the constructions of DAPL. They made petitions signing to not construct the pipeline. They want to protect the sacred water of their loved ones. They also say that their mission is to protect the environment near their houses and the ancestral land left. There are many opportunities that come when using social media, one being able to connect globally and send out messages. You have the chance to educate others around you with unknown things. But the challenges you may face is getting only one side of the story or not getting the truth. On the internet people can lie and you may not even know it.

Obama and trump have two different views. Obama thought it would be a great way to get oil as well Trump did. But Obama changed his view when all the downsides of building the pipeline rised. Obama thinks it may cause pollution and can ruin the environment. Trump doesn't believe in global warning, Nor thinks its a problem. Also he is a business man and just wants the profit.
