Phosphor: any substance that emits light when in contact with radiation, such as UV or a beam of electrons. When these electrons come in contact with the phosphor atoms, it gains energy. When the energy leaves the atoms, particles, or photons, are ejected, causing visible light. The shadow plate metal plate with tiny holes, placed so that the electron beam only illuminates the correct phosphors. Beams of electrons are pointed in certain directions and displays the correct colors because of the plate. (photoelectric effect)

The electromagnetic waves in the air are radio waves. These waves are sent through an antenna (a metal conductor) and when the waves travel, it is a current of electrons wiggling their way through the air at the speed of light. When this stream finds the receiver (another antenna), the signal/wave bounces off the dish and into the feeder. The feeder translates the signal into sounds and words on a radio by sending the signal through a small coil of long wire (around an iron-like core) and into a speaker.
