In 1970 these community members formed the Jonesborough Civic Trust. The organization applied Jonesborough's historic preservation movement to the community and helped create the town's public image. The Civic Trust helped organize events such as the Historic Tour of Homes, Jonesborough Days, and the first Storytelling Festival. They also created the framework for the town's historic marketing and tourism promotion, taking models such as New England's town tours and applying them to Jonesborough. The Civic Trust ended in 2001 when it merged with the Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum and the Historic Jonesborough Foundation to form the Heritage Alliance. Many of its members are still active, and the framework laid by the Civic Trust is still used in part today by the Heritage Alliance and other organizations such as the Jonesborough Visitor's Center.
