3 Cultural Artworks

1.) What is culture? - Culture is a custom created by a group of people.

2.) How do people express their cultures? - There are different ways people express their culture, a common way is through a party on an important day.

3.) How do people inherit their cultures from others, such as family or community members? - Cultures are inherited from others by learning more about it through those in their community, family, in laws, etc. People usually get influenced by other cultures but learning more about it and being around those who have that culture help you inherit it in some way.

4.) How do people change culture and cultural symbols to make them their own? - I think a good example of people changing a culture or cultural symbols is fashion from the 2000s. A lot of the fashion from the 2000s are not selected by generation z to become a trend now in 2021.

5.) How have these artists used symbols from their cultures to express their identity? - Every artist has their own art style and their own message within the art. From what I know, I’ve seen people celebrate hispanic heritage month through their art and sharing it through social media. I know a lot of artists that like to use their home country’s flags on their art as well.

1.) What do you see? - I see two figures within the earring. The earring is shaped like a shell and it looks like it's made of gold.

2.) How do you think these objects might have been used? - I think the pair of earrings were used for an important event.

3.) What kind of person might have worn them? - I think a rich person or an important person wore these earrings because they look expensive.

4.) What might the materials have said about the weather? - Since the earrings look bright and colorful, I think the earrings were made in summer. I feel like they probably used natural colored items to create a color palette.

Modern Day Ear Plugs

What are your thoughts on this trend? - All I know is that for some indigenous people they used earrings as a way to symbolize something either a chief, etc. A lot of people these days use earplugs and I don’t know if it's correct for them to do that because it is something cultural for people. I feel like a person took that idea and started using it as a trend in the years 2010 and above.

How does this trend support the idea that “everything old is new again”? - I think that idea of “everything old is new again” because a lot of trends are just resurfacing again for the next generation who haven’t seen it.

Online Collage and drawing paper:

I think that online collage was easier than the paper drawing. I just had to log in to an application and start to look for images that captivated my attention. I put 40 images in total in the online collage. Honestly in the beginning I was a little lost because I don't understand the directions because it's hard for me to understand because I am still learning English but I asked a classmate for help, and she helped me.  The part of the drawing was kind of difficult because I am not good at drawing but it was not impossible, I did it. When I finished drawing I realized that drawing is not bad at all, it makes us relax and put our mind to work and to imagine things.
