In the story Janes husband brings her to a "nice and beautiful" home. He puts her into a room with the bed screwed to the floor, bars on the windows and chains to hold her down on the bed. At this time she was in a room like an insane asylum. She felt the bars symbolize her relationship with her husband. The chains represent the narrator's dream to be free and escape the house. She is trapped in a place where she feels she can't move much. She does not feel like anyone is listening to her and that she is trapped in the house and in the room with the yellow wallpaper with no one to hear her. She states that she feels very out of control, but that her husband gets upset with her when she expresses it. Yet he says he is bringing her to a nice beautiful home without even letting her see it

The wallpaper is a "smoldering, unclean yellow." She starts to see faces in the wallpaper. At one point she says, "There is a recurrent spot where the pattern lolls like a broken neck and two bulbous eyes stare at you upside down."

By the end of all of it she goes insane. She sees the wallpaper moving constantly, she says, "Sometimes I think there are great many women behind, and sometimes only one." She is talking about how many women she sees in the wallpaper. She talks about how she is helping this woman by pulling back the wallpaper and helping her out. By the end of it she basically thinks she is the woman in the wallpaper, "I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can not put me back!"

Jane thinks the woman in the wallpaper can get out because she seen her out of every window. She says it's the same woman who is always creeping. she sees her creeping in the garden, the long road under the trees, and when a car comes she hides under the berry vines. Jane wonders if she could see the woman through all of the windows. But whenever she turns sheer can only see one at a time. Jane has even watched her go off in the open country, "creeping as fast as a cloud shadow in the high wind."
