He didn't love Abilene despite how much she loved him and only cared for what she gave him. Pellegrina told Edward "You disappoint me." and the story is solidified as a warning for what will happen to Edward if he doesn't learn to love.

Edward is for the first time truly scared for his life worrying if he can drown. He also takes note to losing his pocket watch and fine clothing. At this point he is quite selfish worrying more about his life and his clothes rather than the people he's been separated from.

Edward thinks about the stars and the story Pellegrina told. He isn't quite sure why the princess, was turned to a warthog but he thinks Pellegrina is the witch and that it's her fault he's stuck there. This shows that he is still mostly the same as he's always been. He may still seem the same but but this puts some perspective after what he's now gone through and is the catalyst for what's to come.

Edward was so relieved to be out of the ocean that he didn't care for things that would have hurt his ego before like being called an "it" and being in a small less well-off town. While he is still selfish and egotistical this experience has opened him up for more development.

Throughout chapter 9 Edward (now known a Susanna) is living peacefully with the old couple. While at first some things like being in a dress and sitting in a highchair at the the table horrified him, he soon got over it realizing that the ocean was much worse. This basic "the ocean was worse" mentality becomes the catalyst to his whole journey. While he is still selfish and still has an ego, he now shows more care for the people around him listening to their stories like when Nellie told him of her son who died at only 5 years old from pneumonia, or gazing at the stars with Lawrence as he points out and names the constellations. While Edward is still a long way from truly loving people, this is vital as it is when he first starts to listen to what others have to say and he's been humbled to where he doesn't care as much about the minor details and living in a poorer household. Instead, he is content.

Edward is content in his life with Lawrence and Nellie until in chapter 10 their Daughter Lolly comes for a visit and takes Edward to the dump. This differs from when he was thrown off the boat as this time his heart called out to him with two words. Nellie. Lawrence. This contrasts with before where he is thinking about himself and if he will die and his lost clothes and pocket watch. While he is far away from learning to love, these two words are enough to show how much he has grown already.

But eventually he is just taken with despair as he is a different rabbit then he was before. He now realizes that the which turned the princess into a warthog because she didn't love anyone, and he knew Pellegrina had told him "You disappoint me" because he didn't love Abilene. Also he doesn't quite know what love is, wondering if him missing Lawrence and Nellie was love. Edward has gone from a rabbit who doesn't care about love or anyone else to someone who misses people when he is separated from them and questions what love is.

She then takes him across the railroad to her owner: the hobo Bull. He then asks if Edward wants to be lost with he and and Lucy before taking Edward on the the run with him. We see Edward's growth here in how he reacts to being picked up by Lucy. Before he described being picked up by Abilene's dog Rosie as one of his greatest indignities; his ego was very hurt. Compare to now where he is quite happy to be in her mouth and out of the dump. He even points out how he would've been ashamed to be in the situation he was in at that point.

He quite enjoys living as a tramp, something that shows how much he's changed from someone who thinks he needs a fancy pocket watch to someone who is happy living on the road. The other hobos get accustomed to him and start whispering the names of their loved ones in his ear ; he has now became a great listener. This shows how he has grown by him listening to the names of peoples loved ones and parallels to him thinking of the names of the ones who love/loved him.

After being discovered while sleeping in an empty freight yard, Edward in kicked out of the train car and separated from Bull and Lucy. When Lucy is being kicked, Edward regrets being made of china more deeply than ever. We know he's really changed as he most wishes that he could move when someone who loves him is being hurt, which is not the selfish rabbit who we met earlier who probably most wanted to move when he was stuck on the shelf. Also when he is alone on the dirty hill, he thinks about how many times must he have to leave without getting to say goodbye and feels a deep ache inside him. We see him now, someone who clearly had a very deep bond with these people and aching inside when he is stripped way from them which pales in comparison to how he didn't even really think about Abilene when being thrown off the boat.

In chapters 15 and 16, Edward is a scarecrow. His sadness being replaced with despair. He doesn't care what what happens to him thinking "what's the point" "I've been loved. And so?". He thinks he's done with caring now. Even as he's being saved by the young boy Bryce, he thinks that it's too late for him. Up until he has been fully freed by the boy and thought he maybe did have a chance. This in one of Edward's low points. He think's he's done with even caring for others and is a hurdle he has to jump before continuing his journey. This does show how he's progressed as him feeling so hollow inside shows that what happened has affected him, which does say something, and when he's saved by Bryce he feels hope again, which means that he couldn't have lost all his care.

We see Edward saddened by her coughing, and wishing he had wings to fly her up to where the air was cleaner. This is different to just before where he wished for wings to escape his troubles and now, being with Sarah Ruth has edged him further along the path of being less selfish. He enjoys the warmth of her holding her and rocking him like a baby and he thinks "He wanted to care for her. He wanted to protect her. He wanted to do more for her." which shows he is really starting to care for her and become more caring and even more loving.

He sees Pellegrina and begs for her to save him. " I have learned to love. And it's a terrible thing. I'm broken. My heart is broken. Help me." This shows that he has learned to love. While Edward has changed much, he was a good listener, cares for others, wants to help when they're in pain, and has loved.
