The Democratic platform outlines the beliefs and policies of the party. The documents available for the public to read and understand the “principles and values for which that party stands.” A few topics the Democratic party covered in the 2016 platform include: creating jobs with a fair pay; “raise incomes and restore economic security for the middle class;" “fight for economic fairness and against inequality;" unify American citizens and “remove barriers to opportunities;" protect voting rights, reform campaign finance, and restore our Democracy; take action against climate change, promote clean energy production, and “secure environmental justice”; “provide quality and affordable education;" guarantee “health and safety of all Americans;" provide leadership that is principled, provide veterans with what they were promised for their service and “support our troops;" confront threats from other countries; protect the values of American people; and maintain America’s global leadership position.

The Democratic party believes in unity and does not like conflict. This is why many of the topics the Democratic party covered had to do with equality and the environment. Decreasing the amount of violence and handling problems in a peaceful way is what the Democratic party platform wants. Equality, peace, and working together is what the Democratic platform is about.

When reading the Democratic platform of 2016 there were many topics covered that I agreed with. However, one that I was not fond of was "making debt-free college a reality". I understand that college tuition is extremely expensive, but it is not possible for everyone to go to college for free or without any debt. Taxes would be raised, and the U.S. would be in more debt than we are now. It would be great to go to college for free or for a little cost, but I do not believe that is possible. I think schools should make their prices as low as they can based on their resources. However, tax dollars are already supporting students that need financial help. There are too many students for the U.S. to cover all education costs. I think the idea of free or low-cost tuition gets peoples hopes up. This is aggravating to me because it is not possible without damaging effects.

One of the subjects mentioned in the democratic platform of 2016 was our environment. "Building a clean energy economy, securing environmental and climate justice, and protecting our public lands and waters" were all mentioned in this platform. Our earth is the only one we have, and our society takes advantage of that. The democratic party understands how important it is to keep our planet clean and safe for us to live on. It gives me hope that our government will focus on our environment more than we ever have. This is my favorite topic the democratic party covered because pollution affects us and our earth tremendously. It is important that we act instead of watching our planet go to waste. Many people do not believe in climate change. Therefore, it is our governments job educate the public on how we are affecting our surroundings and to enforce laws that protect our habitat.

I always thought that political party platforms were adults fighting like children. Now that I have a better understanding of political platforms, I know why they are so important. Party platforms are people fighting for what they believe and how they want to change society for the better. The way I used to think of platforms was wrong. After researching them I get why they are so important to our country. What citizens see in the platforms affects our votes and how we view our government. My previous understanding of political platforms was uneducated and influenced by people I am close to.

The 2016 Democratic party platform mentioned many controversial topics. However, their platform had strengths and weaknesses. An advantage this platform had was when they mentioned helping the environment, students and the fight for equality. A lot of times party platforms are looked at as a group of ruthless people who only care about themselves. With that being said, they mentioned peace and helping different causes which benefitted them. People tend to trust others that seem giving or open minded and that is what they accomplished in this part of the platform. On the other hand, the biggest weakness in the 2016 Democratic platform was when they were unrealistic. Free or low-cost education was mentioned in their platform. Although it would be great to have little to no student debt; it is not possible or realistic in anyway. This makes the Democratic party seem impractical. Overall, the platform talked about a lot of contemporary issues and put insight on almost any topic you could think of that relates to politics. After researching the party platform, I am now more aware of what a party platform is and what they tend to focus on. I learned more about the political parties than I did the federal government. I think the platform would have been better overall if it was more realistic. I know that they want to make a good impression on people but being unrealistic and sugar-coating things will end up backfiring.
