Many people don’t consider the consequences of the risks they are planning on taking, or act on impulse, especially teens, “From a developmental perspective, teenagers' brains are still growing, including those parts that assist young people in decision making. The parts of the brain that form our values, moral understanding, impulse control and rational decision making (based on considering all options and consequences) are still maturing. The brain reaches its developmental capacity sometime in early adulthood” (IBook Page 9). Many teens get into trouble because of this.

Another things that lead many people (especially young people) to injury, illness or death, is peer pressure. It’s hard to refuse something when you feel an insane amount of pressure to give in, it makes it even harder when your brain is still growing too, “Teenagers are finding their feet in the world and part of that often includes a sense of wanting to belong and 'fit in'. No one likes to feel isolated or alone, especially when you are a teenager. Feeling like you belong to a group and have special people you can trust and talk to is important. For some young people, wanting to fit in and be seen as a group member may lead you to perform behaviors that you would not normally have done had there not been this pressure present. For example, smoking a cigarette or drinking at a party. This might be due to the perception that not 'joining in' may be seen as uncool” (IBook Page 9).

While it’s easy to make bad decisions, it can also be easy to make good ones. The process can be a whole lot simpler just by asking yourself questions, or getting other to help, “Young people make many major decisions on a whole range of important things that will lead to specific consequences. Most decisions often require:

thought and reflection: asking oneself: What will this mean if I choose to ....?

thinking through consequences: both positive and negative, short term and long term

thinking through how the decision may impact on others, such as friends, family

reflecting on how the decision will impact you personally” (IBook Page 9).

A few years back, I heard my parents talk about someone from their hometown who had passed away. He had been doing drugs for years but sadly ended up getting into more severe drugs. He had been a good friend of my parents so they were really upset when they heard about his death.
