Shorty after the end of WW1 a nationwide scare of communism developed. The fear of communists, socialists and anarchists took hold of the minds of our citizens after multiple anonymous anarchist bombings. American were scared of losing what freedom they had to the Communists. People like Sacco and Vanzetti were jailed for having an opinion and an affiliation with the anarchist. Other immigrants were treated horribly, people would go out of their way to be scared of them and try to put them in jail just for the promise of safety Individuals thought a Bolshevik-style revolution would begin. BUT...Just as quickly as this scare started, it was over.

During WWI and after, communism was a type of government that people feared. Communism is, as shown, "a : a theory advocating elimination of private property b : a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed" (Merriam-Webster)

In America, people were so used to having their own say with what they get to keep as their own and about what is going to happen in their country. Communism was known to the Americans as something that was horrible, which is what it was. They knew that they would loss all private property and almost all say in what happened in their own government. This is what we came to know as the Red Scare. The period of time where people were deathly scared of losing what freedom they had.

During the red scare everyone was anxious and suspicious. Anyone who wasn't seen as "The Perfect American" (Extremely patriotic) was seen as evil. Individuals of German, Italian and Russian decent were also targeted furiously because of the communist reputation of Germany and Russia.Even if some of the immigrants had never done anything bad, or like communism, they were still regarded to be communists of affiliated with the communists. If you just happened to have a relative that was a German, Italian, or Russian, you too were considered to be a supporter of communism. Americans feared them and started to take out their fear on them. They would refuse to buy products from their stores, causing most to go out of business as they weren't making any money. Even children who had heritage from across the world were treated differently. Businesses such as the International Workers of the World and "Big" Bill Haywood were ignored because of their objections to WWI making them 'unpatriotic' Any kind of business with them was suspicious.

The Sacco and Vanzetti Trial

At the time, Immigrants were regarded as a bad thing, and most from America were scared of them. Sacco and Vanzetti were two Italian immigrants who were known to be Anarchist. They were convicted of wrong doings due to their beliefs and their ethnic background along with the fact that most thought that they had committed murder without any proper evidence. They were supporters of an Italian immigrant who held revolution- type uproars. This was including bombs and other types of explosions. When a shooting broke out at their work place, they were convicted due to them being a different ethnicity. They were taken into custody and interrogated as to who they had guns on their person when they were taken, the men lied as they did not want the police to know about bombing plans and other things their organization had in store. The police wrongfully thought that they were lying because they were the ones to commit the shootings, when in fact they were not. though the police department found evidence that could of proved that they were innocent, that proof was withheld from the jury. Thus resulting in them receiving a guilty verdict on July 14th, 1921. This was not the end of this case however. The trial was held multiple times in multiple locations, but eventually, the two we killed by electrocution on August 23, 1927. Years later, scholars still are not sure about if Sacco was innocent, as some evidence came up to prove he was guilty but the evidence still proved that Vanzetti was innocent.

On May 19th 1921 the "Emergency Quota Act" was signed by President Warren G. Harding and made it so only about 3 percent of European immigrants everywhere were now allowed in the country. Because of the red scare many thought that people who lived in Europe were out to get them. This was a problem because after WW1, a larger percent of European immigrants wanted to go the us becuase of all the fighting that had happened.
