1- The poet uses sensory and sometimes complex words to help us understand the viewpoint of the speaker.
2- Austere has multiple denotative meanings, that all work to contribute to the theme of the poem.
3- The poem talks about a kid who grows up watching his father live an empty life
4- Speaker is the son, he's speaking to himself almost (inner monologue)
5- Sunday, blueblack, ached, splintering, breaking, chronic, austere, lonely offices
6- The shift is at "No one ever thanked him"

1. Lines 2 and 3 show the tone of being icy, lonely, and painful. Words, such as "blueblack" and "cracked hands" are the main words that contribute to that tone.
2. Austere - severe or strict in manner, attitude, or appearance.
3. The theme of the poem is that you can never truly understand someone's pain until you go though it yourself. We all grow into the struggles that our parents faced. Line 5 contributes to the theme when it says "No one ever thanked him".
4. The speaker of the poem is the unappreciative son of a hardworking man. He is reflecting upon his childhood and his current situation.
5. "Splintering", "chronic", "cold", "austere", and "lonely" are the significant words in this poem because they emphasize the pain that the speaker's father went through.
6. Tone of the poem is reflection and regret. A big shift that emphasizes this regret is in line 5 when the speaker says "No one ever thanked him", referring to how the speaker should of thanked his father for all the hard work he did.

1. It seems really cold and dreary, his dad was older and worked a lot. Feeling of sadness and regret for not thanking him. It relates to winter because its cold and dreary and dark.
2. An unfamiliar word we see is banked. Banked means a massive amount or mound. This meaning fits into the poem because the father works hard to make a large fire to heat up his family.
3. The theme of this poem is to be thankful for your parents and what they do for you.
4. The speaker of the poem is someone looking back on what his father did for him when he was younger.
5. Cracked hands, chronic anger, blaze

1. The poet uses word that sounds pretty harsh to contribute to the tone because it gave the poem an over all cold, harsh tone.
2. Austere was the only word that really stood out to us, after further research, we found that austere means severe or strict in manner.
3. Your parents work very hard for you to have a good life, you should appreciate everything they do for you
4. The speaker is the author of the poem because the poem feels very personal. We don't think he is speaking to anybody in particular, just sharing his thoughts
5. The words "cold" and "warm" those words, especially the word cold, really set up the motif of temperature within the poem.

1. The child is talking about how their father had to work hard, and the child did not appreciate their father's work when they were young. This word choice leads to the idea of incredibly hard work without appreciation.
2. Austere means severe, or strict in manner appearance, or attitude. This fits into the poem because the father and child loved each other, but it was a tough, strict love.
3. The theme of the poem is to appreciate hard work. The diction contributes to the tone by making his hard work seem more earned. This leads the child to be more appreciative of their father's hard work.
4. The speaker of the poem is the child, and they are speaking to their father.
5. Blueback cold, and cracked hands that ached from labor are important words, because it emphasizes the fact that he worked very hard in harsh conditions.
6. The tone of the poem is reflection and regret. There is a tone shift in line 10.

Austere means being plain and strict about your appearance.
3. Always appreciate what people do for you.
4. The speaker is someone who has a caring dad.
5. Father, crying, Sunday and thanked.
6. The last two lines is when the shift happens.
