In "The Lottery", the purpose of the ritual is to help their crops grow. They believe that a sacrifice will cause more successful crops. In the story, Old Man Warner says " 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' First thing you know, we'd all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns.' " This clearly shows the idea that the ritual is held for the purpose of the towns crops.

We know that the lottery could not be for the purpose of decreasing the population because there are only about three hundred people in the town. There would be no need to reduce the population if there were barely any people in the town in the first place.

The Lottery's purpose is for the purpose of crops, while the purpose of the Hunger Games is to almost "get revenge" at the districts. The Hunger Games is simply an act of evil or revenge, while The Lottery is doing something for what they think is good. Although it may not have been good, they believed what they were doing was for the good of the town.
