The Soviets were the first to put something in space with their creation of Sputnik. They were also the first to put a person in space. This was a huge accomplishment as that has never been done before. Putting an object into Earth’s orbit is one thing, but putting someone on the Moon is another. This was what the US was shooting for. That is how it created more competition

With new technology coming out and being invented, there was even more competition to be better than the other. Artificial satellites, unmanned probes, and human spaceflight were all invented to outsmart the rival. Also the Soviets thought that they had fallen behind the US, causing them to speed up production. It pressured the Soviets to go further through space than they thought, at a faster pace.

It created competition by trying to outsmart the rival. The US and Sovites wanted to show that they were smarter than the other. What better way to show that than doing something that has never been done before: sending somebody into space. Another reason it created competition was the funding. The United States put a lot more money into the NASA program the the Sovites did to theirs. This put a ton of preassure on the Soviets to succeed. Another reason the Space Race created competition was that they wanted to be the first to reach the moon. The Americans didnt care if Soviets got the first object in space, they cared about putting a man on the moon.
