There are various scenes that have really good head shots of the characters not only that but, their usage of sound effects to control the mood (ex: suspense) is really well done.

Bicycle thief portrays the Italian people in a way that is meant to invoke sympathy for them (in a time when there was no sympathy due to their role in the war). This could be propaganda because it doesn't show the role the Italians had in the fight for Fascism with Germany. On the other hand it could not be because it shows the impact on the average citizens that were affected by the war.

because of the fact that this film has an intention behind it, and that intention is to bring sympathy to the Italians, following WWII. The film used pathos to dig into this intention, like the scene involving the large wall of sheets that were pawned off, showing how many citizens of Italy were struggling and desperate, having to sell their sheets. I say this all with two things in mind: 1. The amount of exaggeration that was put into this film, and 2. The idea that propaganda isn't inherently bad and could be used for beneficial causes.

Yes because in the scene where the guy tells his wife he needs a bike it shows their house which looks sad because they have had to pawn everything that is of worth

I think that film in general always has a point of view or a bias , but especially staged realism because the choices made (costuming, lighting, music etc) are influenced by the objective of the film and the bias of the directors and stage managers.

There were many scenes in which the shots conveyed a certain mood without the use of dialogue. The use of sound was also very good since it sometimes brought tension to certain scenes.

yes, because it makes you have sympathy for the things the citizens have to go through such as pawning their sheets and having lack of money. This makes you want to help them. it would be propaganda, because it makes people want to help them,

There are a lot of thoughtful shots in the film that allow it to feel authentic. When the sheets were being pawned, for example, and the camera moves to reveal the many shelves of sheets is telling of the situation in Italy. Mis-en-scene should always be thoughtful like that to tell an authentic story that doesn't feel forced upon the viewer.

i suppose something I could steal from this would be to allow shots that are intimate to take place in the film, such as when she walks into the room and strips the bed of its sheets to pawn.

I think films will always show perspective even of its indirect. That's how storytelling works. it creates a visual representation of someones percpective of some or the perspective of something that isn't real at all.

To a certain extend , Bicycle Thieves would be considered to be propaganda because this film was made after WW2, in which Italy was trying to recover from the cost of the war. But the movie was also trying to demonstrate what the Italian citizens were going trough at the time so other nations could pity them. So the movie wasn't actually propaganda since it was trying to show sympathy for the people.

Wait, isn't propaganda a form of convincing certain individuals by using false or misleading information? I mean, what happened in bicycle thieves is just one of the many examples of what was actually occurring in Italy at that time. People struggling to make ends meet. I just don't know if it's propaganda in that sense.

In this movie there are many powerful scenes that can evoke an emotional response from the audience. There are many thoughtful shots in the movie that show this like the scene in which they sell their sheets and the camera pans out to reveal that the massive pile of sheets that have been sold. This emphasizes the struggle that the people of Italy were going through

and this is because documentaries and staged realism are biased in the very nature of their creation. Whether a creator is trying to push for a specific political point of view or not, they still unintentionally do.

Propaganda and films are very much moved by emotion, it would be hard to ever draw a line between the two. I do think to an extent this is propaganda because Italy did ally with Germany and take part in war and all of the atrocities. This film doesn't even try to be an apology? It only highlights the way they're hurting now, which is not instrumental to healing the rest of the world that you have wronged.

I don't think it is possible. The very act of pointing a camera at something is going to offer a certain point of view, and with filmaking, everything that the director wants you to see gets put in the movie, so in a sense, all movies have an agenda.

Not really because it's showing the lives of post-ww2 europe especially italy after being on the side of the axis powers. Many would still hate and not give a damn. Though for the italian people who never supported the fascist movement it brings a sense of realism as what happend after these 6 years of war.

I feel that this film is propaganda because it wants to the audience to feel sympathy for Italy. This film was made after WW2 and during the war Italy was allies with Germany. After the war there was a lot of hostility towards Italy and Germany. But by highlighting the struggles that the people of Italy went through after the war. This film wants us to feel more sympathy for Italy and that is why I think it is propaganda.

staged realism can be used propaganda, because it is based on truth, but it may not always be used as propaganda. I don't think it's possible for films to not have a point of view, because they are trying to evoke emotion in order to leave a lasting effect of the viewer, so if the viewer has no point of view on how to look at the film they may not remember it as much.

Its all up to the director, if he creates a documentary but puts in shots that are meant to have sympathy then its hard to not have a point of view in those types of documentaries.

I feel like as long as we can find parallels and identify with certain truths in movies (even those that are fantastically fictional), they have the potential to be propaganda if we mold it enough.

The shots were they didn't explain what was going on, but we as viewers can interpret it. For example, the shot were it shows all the sheets in the wall, they didn't explain why they did that, but we understood that a lot of people were selling their sheets as well so many of them were stuck in similar situations.

I think staged realism or documentary are sometimes propaganda because in most documentary there are a single point of view but in some cases there are two completely different perspectives that shows both sides. It depends on the directors choice whether propaganda should be used or not.

But, you also have to take into consideration on how the viewer takes in the documentary/move/film etc. Although, the film may be trying to portray a certain message or not, the viewer is obviously going to have their own interpretation of it.
