All the water had been polluted and the animals have changed. Effectively, they are bigger and different. Because of the earthquakes, rising levels and constant rain, half of the population died.

In the novel, Frenchie dream a lot during his sleep. His dreams are always about his family and about his memory from the past. I personally think that without all his dream he wouldn’t have had the same motivation to follow Miig’s group and to finally find his dad.

It is a very important tradition for them. In the book, Miig always told some stories from their past and from how the world used to be like before all the changes. I think that stories are important for the younger one to help them understand their place in the world. The stories also help them to act wisely, to shape their perspective of the world and to help them understand other people and their perspective. Also, it help us transfer knowledge and morals across thousands of generations. 

For example, at the beginning of the book, Miig told a story about the history of the world (story part 1). By hearing this story, the children learned how the world was before. This story showed them the dark side of humanity. I seriously think that Miig’s story helped all the children from his group . They all learned some essential lesson that they will use for the rest of their life.

Not long after the beginning of the book, his brother has also been taken by the recruiters. Frenchie succeed to escape to them by climbing on top of a tree. Frenchie was now alone, and he tried to head north. He was cold, hungry and scared.
