Deforestation

Through this project I was able to really understand the devastating effects of Deforestation. Millions of acres of woods are cut every year and they are'nt growing back fast enough to even it out.

The perspective I understood was consumers and environmentalists. We, as a consumer, don't care about how we get our paper or other products as long as we get them, not realising the effect this has on our planet. Environmentalists, on the other hand, want to preserve the forests of our world by recycling, buying green products and much more.

Pollution of Ganges

Through this activity I learnt how human interaction is adversely affecting the Ganges. Many local people, tourists and even large surrounding industries use the Ganges as their dumping ground. I learnt how this not only affects the surrounding flora and fauna but will eventually cause grave problems for us (water scarcity, and more).

The perspective which I achieved from this issue was how environmentalists and industrialists both have very different perspectives regarding this issue. I was able to understand how some people place urbanisation (industries and jobs are a pull factor) over the wellbeing of the environment and vice-versa. I was also able to understand how people justify the issue in different ways. Environmentalists place higher importance on the surrounding flora and fauna and the freshwater ecosystem. Industrialists on the other hand prize modernisation and the growth of this nation's economy.

Wildfires

By doing the poster on wildfires, I learnt about the value of all decisions, big or small. Willdfires are a phenomenon that may be a result of natural causes, but in the past few years, a distinct pattern has been noticed in regards to the initiation of forest fires. Most recent forest fires have been a result of human irresponsibility and the incorrect disposing of dangerous substances involving fire, like matches or cigarettes. Although this might seem insignificant, fires expand in no time and may lead to devastating consequences in just a few minutes. Incidents like the 2016 wildfire of Uttarakhand and Idaho's 'Great Burn of 1901' are incidents that are supportive of the above.

So, through this understanding, I gained an insight into decision-making and how it can be extremely impactful towards sustainability. When linking it to values, there are numerous IB learner profiles that can be associated with responsible choices. Whether it's being principled and obedient towards regulations and personal values, caring and respectful in regards to the environment, or being reflective and proactive when it comes to your actions, I learnt that global growth and sustainability are the core of our school's beliefs and are embedded into us as students as well.
- Pihu Tewari

Water Pollution in Mumbai

While creating and researching for my poster, I learned a lot of the condition of water pollution in Mumbai, how it affects a variety of communities, and some solutions to the issue. Out of all the beaches in the world, the coastal waters in Mumbai are of the worst quality. This impacts the biodiversity of marine life, the tourism of the area, and the local fishing businesses. While there were some beach clean-up action plans that were taking place all over Maharastra, little to none of them were making too big of a change.

Communities around beaches often overlook the idea of recycling and being responsible for the trash that they produce. As a result, both marine life and local fishers suffer the consequences. One of the perspectives that I learned about was the fishermen of the area. Because rivers, beaches, and any other water bodies are full of debris and waste, fishermen get either bad produce, or don't catch any fish. This pollution has gotten so bad that certain popular species of fish are becoming endangered or extinct. One of the values that I thought were important were social responsibility, decision making, and being reflective.

Poaching in the Himalayas

While making my poster on poaching in the Himalayas I learnt quite a lot of information about it. I learned that poaching was actually very big in the Himalayas and is a huge issue, in fact it was so big that there are hunting websites where you can buy a package of hunting Himalayan Tahr which is an endangered species. I've gained a perspective that people would just anything for the pleasure of it. I also learned that most of the Himalayan animals are decreasing in population due to the hunting and poaching that is occurring there. For example, the Himalayan Tahr's population is endangered an still decreasing. Even though this is a very bad thing there are some actions that are been taken. Snow leopards are now safe as there have been many strict laws that prohibit poaching of snow leopards with severe consequences.

Death Under Water; The Sad Story of the Dying Marine ife

Carrying out my research and creating my poster, I learnt about the value of sea life, and the value of preserving and maintaining our world, and all the life on it. Making this poster made me realize how much damage we do to the nature for our personal advantage. I realized the danger of our actions, and how marine animals are actually in great danger. I also did research on how to help solve these problems individuals, and what common people like you and me can do to help this cause.

I also learned about how marine pollution can effect locals, nations, and the world as one. Marine pollution affects more people than you know, and without marine life economies worldwide could possible crash, as in many countries fishing is the main source of income.

Overall, I learnt a lot of useful information and plan to educate other people about this, and try and help this cause out. This is our world, and we have to look out for each other insteadd of taking advantage of the nature.

As an IB student, I have built on my values of social responsibility, decision making, and on my ability to reflect on the action of the past. I now understand where we went wrong in the past, and what we could have done better to preserve marine life better. I hope to help solve this problem before any species go extinct, and its too late to help the marine life.

I did not know the importance of this project and crucial it is. I also found out that the little we do will help for whatever we are spreading awareness on.

I got a perspective of a global citizen as I understood how important the project was, that was good because I tried to help not only in the project and also other ways. I also learnt how to get creative with the poster.
