About Monkey Shanti

Swinging from one style of music to another, South Asian fusion band Monkey Shanti breaks the language and genre mould with their eclectic mashups, covers and originals. Their performance is a celebration of diversity, unity and the timeless power of music harmoniously blending regional folk and pop music in various languages from across South Asia with genres like indie, folk, pop and rock from the global north that resonates with one and all.

Dr Noella Binda Niati is an Assistant Professor of Education and International Development at the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge. Her research sits at the intersection of youth engagement, Hip-Hop pedagogy, (reverse)migration and critical development discourses in West and Central Africa. She explores these themes through a mixed methods lens informed by an interdisciplinary and comparative approach examining critical theoretical frameworks in education, international development, history and art.

Binda has worked with the Research, Evaluation and Measurement Center and the Rule of Law Collaborative in the USA, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Côte d'Ivoire and in the Education sector of the UNESCO Regional office in Senegal. Her work is often mixed methods with an emphasis on culturally responsive evaluation and critical statistical analysis interrogating social inequalities, epistemic disobedience, the socio-cultural context of language and the role of the state in structuring access.

Prior to joining the Faculty, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the SCRIPTS Cluster of Excellence at Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany, working on a mixed methods project on returns to education, failed occupational aspirations and engagement among Senegalese youth.

Binda has published in a variety of international peer reviewed journals across the fields of research methods, language and education, and comparative and international education. Her research has been funded by the German Research Foundation, the Fulbright Program and the NSEP Boren Fellowship.

A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, she fled with her family to Nairobi, Kenya before arriving in the U.S. on a refugee status. Passionate about young people, social activism, gender equality and access to education in sub-Saharan Africa, Binda is committed to work that considers young people to be at the helm of social change using liberatory pedagogical praxes.
