They are the ones who have never done me wrong and only motivated me to be the best I can be. They are the people who will always have my back no matter what happens. My least favorite commandment would probably be the second one. Seven as a Catholic I still had the hardest time understanding what it meant to not use our Lord's name in vain.

My favorite (and at times least favorite) commandment is the fourth: "Honor your father and your mother". My mom is my hero in my life and everything I do is to make her happy and proud of me. She has made so many sacrifices and continuously teaches me the meaning of courage and selflessness. My father, on the other hand, is no longer in my life after leaving when I was about 10 years old. Since, I haven't spoken to him in about 10 years, I find it difficult to "honor" him, especially when it is best that he is not in our lives. I believe this commandment should stretch far beyond our parents, especially if they have wronged us. Maybe, "Honor one's chosen family and those one truly loves and cares about" ?

-Rosel Hermita

I am personally (if somewhat vaguely) religious and my family is based off Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu values (yes, I know it's weird), and so I understand the importance of one's god coming first in their life. The only "problem" I have is the use of the word strange. And maybe that is nitpicking, but I find immense value in recognizing and understanding other religions, and if most ( if not all) religions are meant to bring one closer to a God and uplift humanity and togetherness, I don't understand the point in pitting other Gods or religions against one another by deeming other gods and ideas "strange"... I dont know. Maybe I am reading the commandment wrong. So it is not my favorite, but it's one I find interesting to think on.

-Isis

As a Catholic I respect and think that all commandments should be followed to one's best ability. However, if I had to pick a favorite it'd be the third. Respecting the Lord's day and taking a "day of rest" is very important, taking time for yourself, to recharge and do what makes you happy. Wether it is a Sunday or a Saturday, taking you're own "Lord's day" as you see fit is key to living a healthy lifestyle. If you are religious, I believe the importance of the Lord's day is even greater, as it should be a day when you pay your respects to your God and practice your religion. Besides that, as I stated, in the secular world, a "rest day"
from work or homework is necessary to stay sane and happy and find a way to destress.

-Santi

You shall have no other gods before Me."

I do not like this commandment because it assumes that there is only one God and that this god is superior to all others. I think that this kind of thinking is what leads to religious war and close mindedness. We should be accepting of the fact that we all worship differently, if we choose to worship at all. Nobody worships the "right god", we just do what makes us happy and gives us purpose in life. To say otherwise is close minded.

My favorite commandment is the ninth which reads: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor". I think it articulates an unusually nuanced idea about the importance of honesty in the justice system. The specificity of not banning lying entirely, but prohibiting slanderous testimony, elevates justice to the reverence it deserves and the respect it needs in order to be effective within society.

My least favorite commandment is the 2nd which reads: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." Where would our civilization be if we could not depict "anything that is in heaven... ...or that is in the earth"? How much art would have never existed if people had followed a strict interpretation of this. And indeed, the Dutch Reformation saw churches and statues defaced and destroyed for violating this commandment. And even if you interpret this to just bar the worship of idols, jealousy and intergenerational punishment are not attractive on anyone, let alone a deity.

- Olivia Stratton

I view both these as uniquely difficult, and as such they are at times my favorite and at times my least. The thing that sets the Ninth and Tenth Commandments apart is that they are not based on actions - they speak of your thoughts. It does not merely ask you to not perform an action, but to repress the desire for something. The Apostolic Creed names sin "by thought, words and deeds" (I'm translating, so I probably butchered the wording), and the presence of "thoughts" is what makes this so uniquely challenging and captivating to me. Something about it says to me "be better."
- Matúš

My parents have made many sacrifices in their lives, supported me all throughout my life, and much more. I find that the least I can do for the two of them is to be respectful and give them the honor that they deserve. As for my least favorite commandment, I think that is a difficult question to answer. The first commandment may be the only one I would question in a world where we are quickly growing interconnected. I understand the message behind it, but I think it leads to a sense of “us against them” mentality when it comes to people stating which god(s) they worship.
-Jonathan

When I was thinking about it even deeper, I thought about the Catholic belief that are people are the sons and daughters of God. So it makes even more sense that this commandment is so important, as to kill someone is to kill a child of God, to disrespect the image of him.

My least favorite commandment is the fifth commandment, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy". While I do think it is important to stop and reflect on one's spirituality, in today's world, this particular commandment is very difficult to follow. From my chosen source, my favorite commandment reads "thou shalt not covet". I chose this commandment because it emphasizes the importance of gratefulness and acceptance of what a person has been given the opportunity to experience or come across, instead of constant dissatisfaction that may result from superficial comparisons of others. I really don't like the translations of this commandment that emphasizes that one should not covet a neighbor's wife because, it makes me feel pretty objectified so there's that.

Katie Miller

Unlike the Romans, who believed all gods were real no matter if they were foreign, this commandment allows for the disregard of other beliefs. The 10th commandment is one of my favorites because it pertains to one of the most common human weaknesses of want. My understanding is that the commandments were created to help establish order and promote morality and virtue among people. A belief in other gods can and has done that for many people, for example within Buddhist and Native American culture. I also think that the exclusivity associated with this commandment can make the people who abide by it more likely to look down at and express hatred toward those who practice other equally valid religions.
Viviana
