Currently, we know that the insurrection on Jan 6th, 2021, was when a mob of Trump supporters (and people who were against the government) violently stormed the capital to prevent the certification of the electoral votes. We also know that to this day the government is still arresting those who were there and that Trump is still in court for criminal charges.

It is sad to see how despite trying to make the world more peaceful and filled with care for one another, there will always be a few people who decide to bring violence and hatred. On Jan 6th, 2021, our democracy was being threatened by the attack. From that, I'm still confused about why Trump isn't held responsible and convicted for his involvement (the speech that influenced the mob) while everyone else who was part of the insurrection is being arrested and punished for their crimes. Also, even though there probably is a "reason", how can Trump be a candidate for the 2024 election while in court trials? Overall, I believe that to protect our democratic institutions, the politicians in our government should step up and explain how Trump is potentially going to hurt our government. And, for people who can vote in the USA, they should keep an eye out for articles and read what is happening! Knowledge is so important in politics, especially with elections, so people should start reading the campaigns and things that the candidates are saying!

The videos of the police being smashed while screaming was heartbreaking to watch. I was saddened to learn people’s lives were taken and they were unable to go back to their families. It’s upsetting it took Trump so long to have any say in anything as he watched the chaos unfold in front of him. He could have prevented the violence that took place on January 6th. The noose that is a hate symbol was disturbing. Seeing someone be shot was also bothersome.

What I find more disappointing is that hours later Trump tells everyone "To go home in peace" after all the chaos that has been done. As of right now, we know that an insurrection took place that day due to the fact that many people, including former president Trump, believed that the presidential election was stolen and unfair. He gave a speech essentially encouraging people to take matters into their own hands and go down to the capitol. Obviously he was successful. The mobs ultimate goal was to stop the verification of the electoral votes. It was a long and violent attack but they were unsuccessful. Many of those who participated have been identified and arrested.

I think I'm just surprised at how gullible people are. All those people were so easily deceived and manipulated by Trump with a short speech. What I think was the most shocking was the lengths they went to, just to try and prove their "point". What stood out to me the most would be the response Trump gave 4 whole hours after the attack had started. He said to "go home peacefully" which is crazy considering all the damage they had already done.

The lives of those who were holding meetings at the time inside the capitol were at stake. Not only theirs but also all the people participating were risking their own lives when attacking. Some of those lives were actually lost. At least 7 of them and over 100 people ended up injured. The fact that even Mike Pence, Trumps vice president, stated that the electoral votes were indeed fair makes me question wether or not Trump ever doubted himself and thought maybe he was wrong about the election being "stolen".

At this point, we know there were around 2,000 people there and as of 2024, over 1,100 have been charged for their involvement in the event. Like Alexis said, calling it a violent massacre vs. an angry riot has very different connotations, yet it is very clear it was not a "peaceful protest" as the former president dubbed it. So what should it be called? Also, Trump was impeached twice for the abuse of power/obstruction of congress, and for incitement of insurrection. I would like to know how it is allowed by the government that someone who instigated and supported this event that encouraged people to destroy the government he was a part of, is allowed to run for office again?

I remember watching the storming of the Capitol on the news during quarantine, but I hadn't seen the hate symbols and slurs being paraded and shouted around which was very jarring and uncomfortable. Seeing the noose someone brought really shocked me as there is only one interpretation that can be made as to why they brought it. Seeing that side of America is honestly really scary and makes me not want to live here sometimes. It's baffling to see so many people contradict their previous opinions such as "blue lives matter" vs. "f--- the police" or supporting Trump and Pence, but as soon as Trump says to attack Pence, they're suddenly screaming that they want him dead. These are the same people shouting, "no Trump, no peace." This mindset that that group and many others have (following everything a person says, treating them like a dictator, which only feeds the power they have) really worries me because of the future of our country and how it will be ran; will democracy die?

Our country's entire future was at stake on January 6th, 2021. This sounds like a stretch, but think about it, we've seen our President of The United States go on live television promoting the idea that the election was fraudulent and unfair and to attack the government because of conspiracies. To see the highest form of leadership in our society act like this and get away unscathed, opens so many doors for future similar events that could get even more out of hand. This also shows how very broken the system is as almost all of the participants have been sentenced or charged with crimes regarding their involvement, yet the one who gave them all the idea to has yet to be held truly responsible. It was enlightening to see other Republicans such as Mitch McConnell explicitly state that Trump was lying and that the election was not fraud, though. Overall, the whole situation is very unfair and this poses massive threats to our political/government's future if we continue to excuse only people of higher positions' behavior.

As of this moment, we know that more than 140 law enforcements were injured, law enforcement undertook a nationwide manhunt for the perpetrators with around 2,000 people in the mob and more than 1,100 people were charged for their involvement in this attack. One of them being the leader of the Proud Boys (a group of all-male neo-racists who engage in violent obstruction of politics), Ethan Nordean was convicted for 18 years in prison. This shows that the people are facing consequences for their actions and to this day, not everyone has yet been charged for their actions. Like Maddy explained, Donald Trump was impeached twice for abusing his power and obstructing the congress while inciting the insurrection; this also makes me wonder why is it that he is allowed to run for president again? Does the government fear that he will once again use his privileges and supporters to “peacefully protest” just to get their way so they let him do what he wants?

I feel curious and my head is full of questions. I am shocked! If the government knows what Trump is capable of then why is he allowed to run for president again? Why is the possibility of this insurrection and other political violence repeating itself being allowed? Is history just rhyming? What particularly stood out to me the most is discovering that someone had brought a noose.

We’ve been shown the abuse of power that our President of the United States has to encourage or promote and attack the government by using the belief of vote rigging and hateful phrases just so we would get his way. With this, history could repeat itself by encouraging so many others and demonstrates how trashed the system is. Trump’s supporters were held responsible for their actions but Trump wasn’t fairly charged. He was impeached, yes, but look, he is still allowed to run for president again.

I also agree with Austin about how it’s obvious that there is racism involved in how easily the White supremacists were allowed to get into the government building to attack while when other issues are seriously peacefully protests, these protesters are shut off and harmed for a right they have and deserve as human beings. As the mob was invading the capital, I agree with Alexis, seeing a guard being squished made me wonder how horrible he felt during that situation. People lost lives and never returned home. It is disappointing that individuals can so easily accept the beliefs of those with greater authority. The individuals may have acted differently, but they opted for violence, which caused injury to a great number of people. Individuals joined in support of the acts of those who were causing destruction. It was truly disturbing how protestors were shouting many hateful comments. The lives of those in Congress were in danger during the recent protests. It is clear that there were injustices in the treatment of the protestors based on their race. Like, how Alexis questioned whether the police would have acted differently if the protestors were black. I believe they would have because people with darker skin are often treated more harshly by law enforcement, which is so unjust. We know that prior to the election, President Trump began to rewrite history, calling the insurrectionists "political hostages" and describing J6 as a "day of love." After the election, he pardoned the 1500 people convicted for J6 crimes.
