I believe that the character of Han Mi-Nyeo and Cho Hyun-ju in Squid game Season 1–Season 2 represent gender in media. Han Mi-Nyeo is a woman battered by society with her sexualizing herself, making use of her appearance, and obnoxious person in order to get what she wants in the Season 1 of Squid game. She plays the stereotype of the “mad woman” in the piece of media where she immediately tries to be at the top of the hierchy by latching onto a strong man almost immediately. Cho Hyun-ju on the other hand is a transgender woman, representing women who are still transitioning and transgender people who are trying to be who they really want to be but being chastised in the process due to the conservative views of the country in terms of gender.

Most female celebrities face backlash about their love lives. Media tends to shine a spotlight on their relationships often overstepping boundaries which harms the individual involved. This kind of attention is not usually directed towards men despite their involvement in worse romantic scandals. This song is about the hate Sabrina Carpenter received after dating Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo's ex. There was no cheating or unfaithfulness involved, and yet the media turned on her labeling her as a homewrecker.

Shuri's character in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is what I believe represents gender in media. It's not the norm for girls to lead a whole nation even in our times, and in her case, she used just to be the only one overseeing Wakanda's technology and applying these as their defense mechanism for their nation. Because of the death of her father and brother, no one else was leading Wakanda and even her people didn't see her as a leader then. However, she stepped up to the role and she proved her worth. She showed how she was destined for the role and could do just as good a job, leading as her brother. She led her nation and successfully defended it, showing she was capable.

The struggle of women is often depicted as inherent, allowing individuals to normalize and embrace their vulnerability and emotional complexities and ultimately dismantle the repressive structures imposed by the patriarchy. The use of St. Joan of Arc in the picture depicts the depth of these struggles through her historical implications, showcasing the effort it demands to understand these struggles--that no matter what, these will never be authentically understood.

I believe misrepresentation and underrepresentation of gender isn’t applicable to solely women, as some genders are not acknowledged or invalidated by the public. And so, I’d like to present another representation of gender inclusivity within media, being Kyuusaku Yumeno (Q) from Bungo Stray Dogs; a canonically nonbinary character. An anime full of complex characters and personalities, it makes it so that this audience is very much included within this media, but enables the viewer to complete the perception on one’s self rather than following stereotypical norms. That being said, this detail is a fun fact that enthusiasts adore, but don’t summarize their entire character to.

Gina Linetti, purest form of the 100 emoji, showcases how writers often fall short with the story line as to how they write a smart, caring, unique woman. Gina is one of my favorite characters, her confidence and wit is all i live for, she’s seen as smart, strong, and is said to advocate for many things through the use of social media. She always confided and sought advice or motivation from fellow women as she references her “gods” are women and often told her co-workers to simply believe in themself and to not change simply because someone didn’t approve of who they were. Apart from that she showcased how women are expected to keep their achievements quiet, she showcased how she changed her ‘high’ grades to lower grades so she’d stay popular and fit the narrative but as she grew up she decided to forfeit the idealistic woman story she created for herself and lived in confidence and became truly successful by the end of her storyline.

In my opinion, Neytiri from "Avatar" is a perfect example of an independent and strong woman. She is proof that women can fight for themselves and their loved ones. Most women are represented as weak, unintelligent, or cute. James Cameron, the director of the films, have shown how his female characters work. They fight, protect, speak up, and bring motivation to their clans just as much as the males do. Not only Neytiri is physically strong, but also mentally and emotionally. She has been through a lot even before she met her partner, Jake. Her home has been destroyed multiple times and her peers died at the hands of humans. Which resulted in her hatred towards them.

In the movie, she is able to beat the prejudicial stereotype of “dumb blondes”, as well as pushing feminism forward by proving gender bias wrong through assumptions of “gender-dominating fields”. This movie is able to depict Gender Representation by breaking down general misogyny, yet keeping it in a well-known experience of academia.

At first glance, Luisa from the Disney movie “Encanto” is shown as the epitome of physical strength and resilience, with the power to effortlessly carry heavy loads of objects and protect her family and village from harm. However, this gift of strength soon becomes a burden to carry, forcing her to lift the weight of pressures and expectations on her shoulders. As one of the eldest in her family, Luisa feels the pressure to maintain her superhuman abilities while supporting everyone around her, especially as the village relies on her for protection and assistance. The constant demand for her to “put on a brave face” and suppress her own emotions takes a toll on her mental and emotional well-being, which echoes the challenges faced by many women who are expected to prioritize others over themselves. This gender representation which imposes the pressures rooted in the standards and responsibilities (domestic and career) society created for women lead them to conformity just to avoid discrimination and prejudice.

In the series lessons in chemistry, Elizabeth Zott is a brilliant scientist but due to her pregnancy, she is laid off from her job due to blatant gender discrimination. She even questions her boss that if a man were to get a woman pregnant, would he be laid off? And the answer to said question was no. Using her skills however, she became the host of a cooking show for housewives on tv but she did more than just make recipes— she helped inspire women to pursue their dreams and show them their worth. This portrayal of resilience shows how women back then were able to cope. It showed the ‘housewife’ setup (how they were traditionally portrayed in the media in the 1960s), albeit with a twist.

The lyrics of the song appear to be quite simple and easy to follow, but if we delve deeper and establish a wider interest in this song, the significance of its message gradually unravels as it tackles an issue that remains extremely relevant. Cyndi Lauper intentionally created a song that depicts the gender stereotypes and inequalities women experience daily. Through her music, she successfully demonstrated, in a more positive and engaging manner, the importance of gender equality—normalizing such attitudes and behaviors of women.

I chose Moana as a gender representation in media, because it shows how us women can be able to decide and speak up for ourselves without having the problem of others controlling us on what we have to do with our lives. Moana shows empowerment by standing up for herself to speak her mind, show how powerful she is on her own, and showed curiosity without allowing others that hinders her from speaking up to stop her from showing her side of creativity and strength.
