Before it's advent, women relied on lysol douches, semi-effective condoms, harmful and dangerous abortions or  abstinence. These methods did not work for their own reasons and were even difficult to obtain because of the laws around selling sex-related items in the 1920s-70s. 'The Pill' was easy to obtain, easy to use and was considered an almost fail-safe method to prevent pregnancies. Given funding by McCormick and Sanger, Pincus discovers the correct hormone to stop pregnancy with a pill, progesterone. Even through tricky legal trials and failed factory partnerships, Pincus managed to get FDA approval for his birth control pill, Enovid in 1956.

The use of 'The Pill' has become extremely normal. Is this beneficial? With young girls using birth control pills as young as thirteen, has society normalized the magical baby-stopper too much? Especially given the side effects such as blood clotting, water retention, drastic mood swings, acne, heavier menstrual flow, and a double-sided poster-sized sheet of warnings, birth control is not for everyone. Young women looking to begin 'The Pill' might not have the correct means and education to truly realize the side effects that can come with the birth control pill.
