As healthcare professionals, it is essential to have cultural sensitivity and respect the views, beliefs, and values of all patients. As a healthcare professional, it is essential to respect all cultures and interact with them in a way that is sensitive to their beliefs. Cultural differences between healthcare professionals and patients seem to cause a barrier in communication and trust.

Diversity is becoming increasingly present across all aspects of life. Including gender, race, ethnicity or socio-economic background, diversity and a multicultural environment are important for a whole host of reasons, above all for the different perspectives they provide. When we meet and live and work with people who are different, we are more likely to be exposed to new ideas and new ways of thinking. Diversity brings in new ideas and experiences, and people can learn from each other. Bringing in different ideas and perspectives leads to better problem-solving. Working in diverse teams opens dialogue and promotes creativity.

Multiculturalism stands with the point of diversity, however, this is more generalized into the community through customary behaviors. Everyone has a different cultural, religious, and racial group that they identify with. Cultural sensitivity would also resemble this definition because there should be acceptance and an understanding of all religions, races, and cultures. There are so many groups that bring something great to this world and open doors for other groups to learn and find the beauty of different cultures and different identities coming together to form a unified society. Each culture deserves an acknowledgement and acceptance because it brings on the "language of diversity" to this world.

Cultural humility is a process of openness, self-awareness, being egoless, and incorporating self-reflection and critique after interacting with diverse individuals. In other words, do not be racist. Do not assume someone loves a certain type of food because they are from that certain culture. In the picture below in pink the man says "You're Japanese? you must love sushi!" Do not stereotype someone due to their race and culture. Practicing cultural humility is to be willing to suspend what you know and think about someone based off their culture. Instead, you should be open to learn and be humble.
Green bumble says, "You're Japanese? How do you feel about sushi?"

Cultural Humility is the ability of oneself to reflect and be aware of ones own values and identity. In order to be open to the identities of others we need to self-reflect on the lens we are using to be critical of our own identities versus those of others. This term describes the act of challenging our thoughts and judgements when interacting with someone who may be of a different culture than our own. This allows us to sit back and observe and try to be accepting instead of being judgmental when understanding the values of another person. For this term, I decided to use the photo of a woman looking in the mirror because I think in order to be open with learning the cultures and identities of others, we must understand our own identities.

Cultural awareness is a key component for successful individuals who work in health care. It takes true effort within an individuals inner ability to perceive their OWN cultural beliefs, values, and customs. Understanding how this has shaped their decisions and behaviors will help them to become aware of other cultures ways. Once this process is in motion their ability to take a step back and look into stranger's (patients) points of view and ways they do things. The communication can now begin and hopefully be very effective!

When it comes to physical, emotional, and mental health, everyone has the want to keep themselves in the best shape they can. However, this is often something that is unattainable for many, due to the current conditions of the health care system in the United States. From high premiums to skyrocketing prices of drugs by Big Pharma, some people are not able to get the care they need for themselves or their families. This is why we need health equity across the board. Essentially, health equity is the equal and fair opportunity for individuals to have access to health care. This requires removing obstacles to health such as poverty, discrimination, and money-driven insurances. I attached the picture below to demonstrate that equality does not mean equity. Some individuals need more help or support to reach basic care than others do. All in all, we should want to push and support one another to ensure that no man, woman, or child is left unable to receive the care they need to live a long and healthy life.

Cultural Competence is very important in health care services because although we face social inequalities and come from different backgrounds, as individuals seeking health care we expect to receive equal care. Being culturally competent allows for us to set aside our own beliefs, morals, attitudes, and behaviors so that we can fully understand how to care for an individual. We must be culturally competent because although social inequalities and cultural differences exist, when one seeks care they are expecting to get the same care as any other individual. Without cultural competence, health care would be bias and create a lot of discrimination and racism towards other cultures. Health care must treat everyone as a human being and not focus on their cultural beliefs or the color of their skin.

Health equity refers to a belief and practice that tries to provide each individual with specific resources needed to achieve wellness. The health inequities arise in communities due to unequal allocation of resources and power and structural inequities created by laws, policies, governance, and culture. The disproportionate distribution of money and effective resources to communities based on their ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, etc. lead to worse living conditions and less opportunities to live a healthful life. This image perfectly describes the difference between equality and equity. Health equality means that everyone is given the same resources, and people assume that it is enough for each individual to thrive. On the other hand, health equity is providing each person with materials that cater to their specific needs. So, in the top picture each person is given a bike, but it is only appropriate for the woman. The bottom picture shows equity as each person gets a bike that matches their height and ability. It is crucial that health professionals practice health equity (fairness) rather than health equality (sameness).

In America there is a lot of social injustice. People are treated unequal based on color, sexual orientation, etc. and we need to change that. Social justice is important in healthcare. There are multiple factors that lead to health disparities between groups of people. We must improve social justice so everyone could have equal access and treatment in healthcare. Overall, ensuring the populations health.

My picture shows different nationalities greeting each other and to me this is important because i travel a lot and I have experienced differences in cultures multiple times. As a quick example, I was in Mexico City last week and people their are very humble and greet you as you walk by them. The first time i was in Mexico City it caught me by surprise because here in Orange County, if you were to greet every person you walk by, people would think you're crazy for talking to strangers on the street. Over in Mexico City, it is the normal thing to do and on the other hand, people would assume you are rude if you didn't greet people.

The picture I have posted below shows how many different characteristics make up an individual. Therefore, making everyone different and shouldn't be put into one category more than the other. There are many stereotypes for every characteristic of every person but it doesn't mean that because they have a certain one, they are more or less than another person. Unfortunately, in today's society, we see this often and it is wrong to be categorized by another who doesn't know you or your culture.

Cultural sensitivity is being conscious that cultural differences exist between people without judging or assigning them a value- right or wrong, better or worse. A culturally sensitive person would be able to facilitate interaction with others from opposing cultures, with respect and open-mind, to different settings and circumstances. It is vital to be culturally sensitive in a healthcare setting to effectively communicate and resolve issues from patients who have opposing customs, values, beliefs, and cognition to words and language. This practice can prevent possible arguments and cultural barriers with patients. The image below depicts a medical translator helping the doctor diagnosing the patient, who speaks a foreign language. By helping him translate his feelings from the illness, the doctor shows respect, understanding, and sympathy to the patient’s health conditions. He has overcome his language barrier by asking a professional medical translator to help him translate so that he can effectively arrange treatments and medicine to him. This shows that he values his patient’s words and feelings despites of the language difference.

- Candice Shen (Chiachi)

How is cultural humility different from cultural competence?

In my early years of being in the public health major, I was introduced to cultural competency and never heard of cultural humility until recently. And I thought cultural competency was already the best ideal practice for someone to be considerate and respectful to others who come from a different cultural background. However, when I came across cultural humility, I understood that we could do more than just learn the skills to appreciate another group's differences. Rather than having a mindset of "I already know about your culture because I have studied them, so I must know who you are," it's better for us to keep in mind that it should be an ongoing process of self-critique and exploration with the willingness of learning about others.

Social justice is that every person deserves human rights and equality. In other words, every person deserves equal opportunity, treatment, and rights. There are many social injustice around us. Some of the social injustice includes discrimination and unfair labor practices. We need to improve on social justice, so everyone can have access to healthcare and feel safer around the world.

The reason why it is critical and important when it’s related to medical fields because of different nationality, languages, traditional, custom, status, beliefs and perceptions. The picture shows the different nation and their color flags that represent their country. An example, being part of an Asian family, when greeting elderly or someone older than you, you should bow and say “hi or bye” to your grandparents, uncles or aunts.

Cultural Awareness is being able to understand and take into consideration the various types of cultures that can shape a persons ideologies, norms, and beliefs. The picture I choose below provides an example of cultural difference that does not just focus on ethnicity or race but also in other areas such as family, religion, sexual orientation, work, and etc. This image provided a different way to look at things as I look back at the reading we discuss the importance of understanding cultural difference especially in the healthcare. Different cultures have different ideologies that can impact their treatment plan that healthcare professionals need to take into account. Another example of cultural awareness for religion would be Jehovah witness where they do not believe in blood transfusion; therefore, as a healthcare provider we need to be aware of these cultural differences and empathize with our patients.

This is a photo I found from the basicrights.org website. Something that social justice includes in its definition is the equal treatment, opportunities, and human rights to all. Transgender rights are human rights in every way when it comes to social justice. They have faced years of discrimination for being who they are. Not only does this have to do with social justice of equal opportunities and human rights, but also equal treatment when it comes to medical care. Often times, transgender people are not given the right medical care because of a prejudice that a health care worker might have against them.

Cultural intelligence is very important in the workplace, as many different cultures come together to accomplish their tasks in their place of work. It is essential for individuals to understand cultural intelligence and place this in their lives as the United States has become a melting pot for diverse communities. The image that I have provided below is a good visual representation of the term cultural intelligence. These culturally intelligent people are able to get their tasks completed without the cultural diversity being a negative factor.

When a society has social justice this means that everyone is treated equally with the same respect and the same rights. This means that everyone that has the same human rights and do not live with the fear that they will be discriminated based on their gender, race, religion and sexual orientation. Currently our nation is experiencing a lot of social injustice and the picture below is just one of the examples that clearly shows the severity of the issue that we have here in America when it comes to social injustice. This image is trying to portray that the social injustice that our African American Community is currently experiencing in this nation. Social media has made us all aware of the this social injustice that is going on today in our nation. We have all heard about the police brutality that many African American people have been experiencing recently. In this image we can see an African American women with tears and on her face the names of the people that have lost their lives due to police brutality. What really stood out to me is the message on the right side of the image that states "We bleed the same, we breathe the same, so why aren't we.." the image cut off but I can complete the message by saying " why aren't we all treated the same." What is happening in our nation is an issue that affects all of us and it is definitely something that should motivate us to fight for social justice.

In today's social climate, there has been various groups of people who do not possess the same type of privilege as heterosexual males. Many people are currently fighting for social justice and reform especially after the death of George Floyd. In the picture I have provided, the Black Lives Matter movement is the most publicized movement happening as of right now. The Black community is suffering from injustices including mass incarceration, police brutality, and economic inequality. The movement is practicing their rights to push for social justice. In addition to the Black Lives Matter Movement, there is the Abolish ICE Movement, the Transgender Rights Movement, the American Indian Movement, and the Me Too Movement. All these groups of people have been oppressed for years and are fighting for equity amongst the privileged.

Furthermore, health equity is commitment to fair and just practices, policies, etc. In order to achieve health equity, certain living and working conditions must be met, and obstacles to health (i.e. poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion). Overcoming these obstacles, and subsequently progressing toward health equity makes health-promoting resources, education, and services accessible to all. It should be fair, just, equitable, accessible, and basic education. Although multiculturalism at the root is enhancing and supporting the ideas of diversity and inclusion of all walks of life. It is not limited to just race and ethnicity but expands to 🤬, identity, gender, and more. The photo I choose shows children of different races using technology in the classroom either as an enhancement to their learning or a way to accommodate a need they have. I choose this photo because you could interpret it in multiple ways.

Cultural confidence is a term that describes the lifelong process of ones' self-reflection. An individual has to look within themselves to find where their biases and prejudices lie. The picture I chose to share is of a white woman at a Black Lives Matter protest. This woman had to look within herself to realize that the cause she is fighting for doesn't really affect her personal day to day life, which is a privilege. She knows that her silence regarding issues in her community, whether they affect her or not, are affecting her neighbors. She could take the easy way out and just decide to stay quiet about such issues, justifying her choice with her internalized prejudices on the Black community, but she chose to do something instead. She may be uncomfortable doing this type of thing because it maybe she doesn't have the full support of her friends and family, but she is willing to be uncomfortable to make her voice count.

This term reminds me of a picture of amish people circulating around the internet of them attending the Black Lives Matter protest. This picture demonstrates how these amish people put aside their own biases and decided to show up to a cause that is important. This proves that they did not care being put in an uncomfortable situation since they are outside their usual environment.

According to the textbook reading, cultural humility is a process of openness, self-awareness, being egoless, and incorporating self-reflection and critique after willingly interacting with diverse individuals. Although it is important for individuals to possess knowledge to respect and appreciate other cultural differences, it is also crucial for health care practitioners to self-reflect on their own biases or perspectives. I chose this image because it shows how many people place certain stereotypes on individuals based on their previous knowledge or prior experience with a certain culture. As a result, it leads people to believe that one trait or idea is associated with a specific culture. I related this image to cultural humility because people should not assume they know everything about a culture based on stereotypes. As a result, individuals should be willing to continue in learning about different cultures in order to prevent harm or possibly disrespecting a person.

As defined in the textbook, cultural competence is a "characteristic of those individuals who hold academic and interpersonal skills which allow an increased understanding and appreciation of another group's differences and similarities" (Bensley, R.J. & Brookins-Fisher, J., 2018). As a volunteer for the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), cultural competence plays a significant part in the healthcare field. Being culturally competent is to be open-minded while providing care to patients who have diverse values, beliefs, and behaviors, in order to meet the patients' social, cultural, and linguistic needs. Patients who feel respected and are properly taken care of are more likely to communicate freely and honestly, in which can reduce any healthcare disparities and improve patient outcomes.

The term, "Cultural competence," encompasses the whole idea of an individual being able to acknowledge, recognize, and understanding that there are different cultures other than one's own, and being able to effectively interact with others across many different cultures. The image I chose depicts the many factors that must be taken into consideration if one is to have the ability to effectively work with others from different cultures.

Cultural competence refers to the ability of communicating, understanding, and interacting effectively with people across cultures. This is important in the healthcare field as care is provided to patients with diverse values, beliefs, and behaviors and productive health care delivery is also met for patients with social, cultural, and linguistic needs. This image represents cultural competence as these doctors are discussing ways to reduce racial and ethnic disparities, promote compliance, and improve health outcomes for every individual.

Sensitivity and Respect

Cultural sensitivity is the knowledge and acceptance of other cultures and its identities. I chose a picture of a shawl as an example how this is culturally sensitive in some religions. In Catholic churches, arms and shoulders are to be covered. When people visit a house of worship of a religion they do not practice and dress respectfully adhering to the traditions of that religion is a great example. Or another example, would be when non-Asian people remove their shoes in an Asian household. Individuals exhibit cultural sensitivity in multiple aspects not just clothing.

Cultural sensitivity is the ability to accept a different culture’s unique views and having the aptitude to interact and respect them at the same time. This aspect of interaction is such an integral part of becoming a healthcare specialist as we will in the future be handling many patients/clients who come from all different backgrounds. To be more transparent, having this sensitivity towards many walks of life is something that should be a mandatory trait to have especially in this line of work. Since we are all different, there is no doubt patients and specialists won’t see eye to eye all the time. However being having cultural sensitivity, there is a certain level of trust we are able to establish with the patient and thereby increasing our effectiveness to treating them. Learning a second or third language is also another form of cultural sensitivity as it makes the process of connecting and communicating with the patient a lot easier for both parties (I feel that this aspect of cultural sensitivity could be applied to cultural intelligence as well).

Being culturally aware is having the ability to use academic, experiential, and interpersonal skills to increase their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities. Being educated and traveling is a great way to raise awareness of other cultures. Raising your cultural awareness will help in all aspects of your life and especially in the field of medicine where you will be working with different patients from all cultures.
