The target audience may not even realized they are being taught these values subconsciously via storytelling which will increase its effectiveness in embedding these ideas into Children. This in turn will lower the rate of problematic children and thus bring less headaches for the government when dealing with these children. Basically positive brainwashing and propaganda.

-Kai Xin 22S04

The audience laughs together, applauds and shares almost the same emotions. This collective effort experienced by the viewers make the experience more entertaining and enjoyable.
- Films show us history, culture, science, technology, politics and a lot more. In fact, the visual medium is a means of better education as we retain information for a longer time when we visually see it.
- However, majority of the Hollywood movies have questionable content that can corrupt values and characters. It appears that it has become a norm to have inappropriate scenes either as an attraction point or selling point.

Lin Xinhui, 22S04

- majority of the most popular films often come from Hollywood
- it is no secret that Americans tend to be more liberal and open-minded than many other countries
- as a result, the media produced from Hollywood may be viewed as more unconventional than the media produced from other countries such as Singapore
- films from Hollywood may include themes that go against some religious beliefs, such as homosexuality, 🤬 and premarital sex
- as a result, when these films become popular and are viewed by people globally, these themes and ideas may easily influence viewers
- this is why films may be seen as harmful towards religious groups, as it is possible that certain values and themes shown in certain films may go against their religious beliefs, and influence the viewers who could be young and impressionable, causing these viewers to stray away from their religion and its beliefs to follow the values shown in these popular films

Films are beneficial in that:
- they can help spread awareness and address social stigmas which can lead to more acceptance within the community. An example would be the recent documentary by CNA, Inside Maximum Security. This film allows inmates to share their stories and struggles that they have faced or are facing while on their road to release. This has helped the public view them from a different perspective. This can help them integrate back into society more easily upon release, for example it may be easier for them to find a job.
- they can also help instil good morals and social norms into citizens through the films which are shown. For example, Crime Watch. While this show brings entertainment to viewers, it also makes it very clear that if citizens were to break the law, there would be consequences to their actions and there would be consequences.
-films can also help to preserve a culture through educating a wider audience about the it. For example, Crazy Rich Asians. This movie was widely popular in the West as it was by a Western film making company. However, this film was centred around the Chinese culture, more specifically, the Cantonese culture in Singapore. This helped the people be more open towards the Chinese culture.

However, there are harmful effects of films
- As the government regulates the films which can be shown in the country, this can lead to propaganda or brainwashing. While propaganda is not all bad, it can create a false image of the government in citizens. For example, the Singapore government does not allow LGBT+ films to be shown in Singapore, such as a small scene in the 2021 Marvel film, Eternals.
- Additionally, there is no transparency because the government only allows politically correct information to be published. For example, the Russian government only allows news which is supportive of Russia's actions during this Russia-Ukraine War to be published in Russia so as to gain support from the Russians.

-Sandra

For creators working on films-such as film makers, producers, actors etc. films tend to be more beneficial(i disagree with the statement)
-This is because creators can gain recognition for their work via films. For example,Director Bong Joon Ho's Korean films,Parasite garnered critical acclaim and made history by being the first international film to win the best picture Oscar. This feat ensured that he was able to gain recognition for his films and was given credit for his work,Additionally, the popularity of his film paved the way to making Hollywood more inclusive.
-Films are also beneficial for creators because it ensures that creators are able to advocate for important issues. For example, the short film Trevor inspired the Trevor Project to be set up which helps lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths in America. This shows that films can inspire change in communities.
Hence,I disagree with the statement that films are more harmful than beneficial.
Eeshaa 22S04

This has resulted in individuals not having to leave their homes and yet feel entertained or enjoy a leisurely break with friends and family members from the comfort of their homes. Characters in many films often portray morals and virtues that people can learn from to be better people. For example watching characters who are resilient in solving the issue and main plot of the story can inspire people to do the same with the problems they face in their own personal lives.

- People can also find new passions through films. There are many films that showcase other people’s own stories and ways to follow their dreams and passions. Since films are streamed all over the world and word of films are always easily and quickly spread through social media, many people have the opportunity to share the same experience, that is watching the same film.

- Films are created to catch the attention of the producer’s targeted audience, and may not necessarily include moral considerations. Many American producers include gunfights whenever fighting between parties occurs to make the film more attractive, but do not show ways of conflict resolution before usage of force. This influences people who watch the film to turn to violence whenever there is something they do not agree with instead of finding a compromise. In Singapore, possession and usage of guns are not acceptable but in counties with less strict gun laws, like the US, allow citizens to carry guns. This allows easy access to guns and with the increasingly violent films produced, it is expected that gun crimes in a country would increase. The government will then have to spend resources to employ stricter law enforcement and gun possession laws. This causes more money from the government’s budget to be spent on ensuring safety of the country as a whole, decreasing the money that the government can use to improve the country. As such, films are more harmful then beneficial.

-Chantille

I disagree to the statement. In the past, films were only available to wealthy people who could afford watching films as a leisure activity. In today's society however, it is a norm to watch films as a way to unwind from busy work and school life to spend quality time with loved ones. While some might argue that films are harmful due to certain sensitive topics being discussed, it is undeniable that films do associate with positivity too. Films, are versatile; they can be of differing lengths, differing genres, but more importantly, created by different content creators. Content creators come from all around the globe, with differing background and beliefs. Due to this, certain issues faced in their county might not be widely known to others across the globe. Hence, to increase awareness and to potentially aid the situation, films could be a resort to educate viewers on the dire situation. For example to increase awareness about human destruction to the natural habitat of animals, Netflix uploaded many nature documentaries to showcase the wonders of nature without human disturbances. Apart from being a resort to situations, films can also inspire viewers; children these days are exposed to films more than previous generations. Films may therefore serve as inspiration for young minds and therefore fosters good attitude and character. Hence, given the plethora of benefits that films can bring, I therefore agree that films are more beneficial than harmful

Agnes

Films give authors and writers a platform to unleash their creativity by creating immersive and exhilarating scenes that capture the viewers attention. One salient example is the top grossing movie films since its debut :Avengers Endgame. This is due to the fact that audiences are enthralled and enraptured by the CGI and animations that were well thought out by the writers- Stephen Mcfeely and Christopher Markus. The wild imagination of these writers have glorified the movie to win the title of the best movie made in history, and with a $2.8 billion box office haul. Because of the writers wild imagination and creativity, it has set a new boundary and standard for Marvel Entertainment to always create magnificent flims in the future.

-Edric
