Poem 1 - Love in a Time of Climate Change by Craig Santos Perez

I loved the contrast between what should not be loved (metals, 'conflict diamonds', crude oil) and what should be loved (endangered species, the last seed, the fruit, growing organically). The idea of a close 'embrace' seemed to parallel the controlled sonnet structure of the poem.
The poem conveyed hope if we can learn to love the right things.

Poem 2 - Two Steps Down by Richard Pamatatau

This poem contrasted with the Perez poem 'Love...' in the structure of the writing on the page. The space between words and lines was like the space between the two lagoons, one in Venice and one on Tongareva (Cook Islands). Both have been and will be dramatically effected by climate change. The action of stepping down into the rising water made me feel a sense of foreboding. The feeling in this poem, unlike 'Love' (Perez) was bleak, conveying the harsh reality of drowning in the rising waters.
