I think people share their stories because they want to let people know what they have been through or where they came from like in the end of the book Jeannette dad rex dies during their family thanksgiving they make toast dedicated to rex even though he may have been a bad father Jeannette only sees the good in her dad like when she was younger she only saw his good qualities like his stories he would tell jeannette and her sibling and how he protected them and would tell funny jokes in the end Jennette love her dad and he loved her and was proud of Jeannette .
