Management style Forum:

In my BBA2 internship at the Baur Au Lac, Zürich I was a Housekeeping Supervisor and my manager which was the Executive Housekeeper was clearly a democratic manager. She let us have an input but at the end she had the final word, since she was the Executive Housekeeper and she is the one that is in charge of the whole housekeeping department. I think this is actually one of the greatest ways of leadership because she takes other people’s opinion to improve but at the end, she does what she thinks is right since she is the leader. I believe that way of leadership was the reason why there weren’t too many conflicts in the housekeeping, since she was the person who gave the last word.

Thankfully, I haven't had any conflict with anyone in my past internship, but I had some Housekeepers that faced many conflicts when they were put together to clean a room, since each housekeeper had a different method, flow and routine of how to clean a room. This was basically one of the most common conflicts I used to see in the housekeeping department. Many housekeeper used to get into little conflicts and some even into bigger conflicts and fights, which was essentially worthy since it indicated that changes had to be done. The way we decided to deal with this conflict was that the supervisors sat together and assigned certain housekeepers to specific floors and areas with an assistant they can work well with. Finally, we had a meeting with the housekeeper and made sure that they were fine with the new assigning of floors and areas.

To conclude, as much as conflicts are sometimes hard to deal with they really help sometimes with getting a better work flow once you solve them.

One thing that really motivates me and keeps me going are my short-term goals and the feeling I get once I achieve that goal and can go on to the next one. That is also how I personally reach my long term goal. I like dividing my long-term goal into smaller ones (short-term goals) so I don't lose the motivation to the long-term goals and I feel like I achieve more. Motivation is a drive that comes and goes depending on how we feel that's why I believe that having smaller goals that I can achieve faster and easier keep me more motivated over a longer time.

To conclude, one has to always give themselves the feeling that they achieved a goal and can move on to the next one.

In the hotel I performed my internship in there were some ways how they keep the staff motivated. We had an employee of the month for each department and every 6months there was a staff party where they used to announce the employees that won more than once or had an impeccable reputation or achievement, the first would get a trip to the beach and other winners would get other prices. the event was nicely organized and was a lot of fun which motivated many staff members. Moreover, there were the basic bonuses as well which was also a motivating factor for the employees.

Luxury:
The idea of luxury is basically aimed around exclusiveness and feeling that not many people are able to get their hands on that experience. The feeling and experience of comfort, quality and elegance. It is a state that involves a lot of fortune, wealth, standard and money.

Moreover, the feeling that the people around you sharing this experience are in a similar standard as your wealth. It is a state many people aim and wish for around the world.

Luxury for sure has the same meaning today as it had 10 years ago, the only difference is that back then it was way harder to reach a luxury life style back, the wealth was kept within the families and social class. Nowadays more people could save up and enjoy a luxury trip in a cheaper country.

Unconscious Bias:
Unconscious bias is basically an unfounded unfair judgement in favor against a thing, a person or a group. It is something that we can't control consciously, happens without ones control.

I would like to try out many hotel chains around the world to learn more about cultures and different hotel chains. Nonetheless, the hotel chains has to be following CSR and take it seriously especially with sustainability, because if we we don't start being sustainable now we won't survive.

2.

The most important part about the hotel brand is the reputation, respect and values they show, follow and represent.
