Paulsen, Gary. Woods Runner. vol. 1. Ruth Wright Paulsen. 2010

In a section called "Weapons," Paulsen describes the essential rifle needed by every frontier family for hunting. These were relatively expensive items, but absolutely necessary. The British army at this time carried a musket called the "Brown Bess" It shot a ball that was not very accurate. The Brown Bess muskets were also fitted with bayonets, which were blades that fastened to the end of the barrel to act as a weapon. Samuel is still hurrying as fast as possible to the settlement. As he nears it, he smells what he knows is the smell of death amid the smoke. The settlement has been burned down.

Samuel: very good at hunting and has learned to be on his own since he was young because his parents don't pay too much attention to him.
Mom: is always worried about Samuel but allows him to do his thing because she knows that he is able to take care of himself.
Dad: wasn't introduced as much as the mom has been but he is a hard worker and does whatever he can to take care of the family.
Nobody knew is introduced into the story besides the British army.
http://www.ipl.org/div/askauthor/paulsen.html This web page talks about gary paulsen and some of his most famous works.

Gary paulsen was born in 1939. The story was about the revolutionary war so maybe he had ancestors who have lived through it.

Gary, Paulsen. The woods runner. 2010.
