Know What I Mean is about how people believe that hip hop is a stereotype of identities of those who contribute or listen to this genre (if you live in the ghetto, you must do drugs ). Dyson wants to focus on the stereotypes based on identity and explain how they are false and why hip hop is a type of art that brings cultures together by discussing what issues they must face and how to succeed. This relates to our theme because if communities and educators focus on the importance of culture and race, then some of the misguided ideas of hip hop would not exist and instead we can focus on the art form itself and how this cultural group can succeed from the issues being presented in songs.

The Power of Their Ideas talks about how a group of schools Central Park East elementary public schools in Harlem, New York came together to take back public education. There was a big importance put on cultural identity from the communities these children came from. They wanted to mimic a "real world" environment where students had to work with others that may look and think differently than they do. Furthermore, creating an environment where students are not just taught but that a love for learning is nurtured. So they may continue on to higher education and be well prepared. Not just be a nameless face in a mass of students. But that their cultural identify is really valued and their own interests are not just pushed aside but a part of the learning process.
