Plessy vs Ferguson was a Supreme Court case that upheld racial segregation in America and solidified the doctrine of "separate but equal." As you navigate this step-by-step lesson, think about the real-life impacts of citizens in the 1890s. The case was a significant setback for civil rights for black Americans at the time.

1.
Plessy vs Ferguson-A Supreme Court Decision that legalized discrimination

In this lesson, we will talk about the Supreme Court Case of Plessy vs Ferguson. After the civil war, slavery was no longer legal. The rights of black Americans were not established though nor did it receive acceptance. Blacks were not allowed to vote, use the same restroom, own land, and do many other things that they should have been allowed to as citizens. As you navigate through the lesson, try to think about what it would have been like to live during that time. Savannah played a huge role in many of these issues and just north of us in South Carolina, slavery was a more widely accepted practice.
