The article by Liu, Gonzales, and Chan (2021) supports the principles of Backwards Design by supporting the importance of designing digital tools with clear, culturally relevant learning goals in mind. It aligns with Stage 1 of Backwards Design by expressing the learning outcomes that reflect diverse student identities and experiences. It also supports Stage 2 and 3 by highlighting the need for inclusive assessments and learning experiences that are responsive, interactive, and affirming. The article focuses on culturally relevant pedagogy, its emphasis on intentional, equity-driven design complements the backward design process of planning with the end in mind.

Why I Chose This Resource:

I chose this resource because it clearly explains the core idea behind Backwards Design: starting with the end goal (what students should understand and be able to do) and planning lessons backwards from that point. Wiggins and McTighe are the original creators of the Backwards Design model, and their writing is practical and easy to understand. The chapter breaks down the three stages Identify Desired Results, Determine Acceptable Evidence, and Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction with examples that are relevant to both classroom and digital tool design.

How It Specifically Applies to Assignment 2:

In Assignment 2, we’re asked to design a digital tool for a specific educational setting. This resource helps frame that process by encouraging us to:

Think about the learning outcomes we want our students/users to achieve with the tool.

Consider how we will know they’ve achieved those outcomes (e.g., built-in assessments or user feedback).

Design the tool’s content and features to support that learning process effectively.

By using the Backwards Design approach from this resource, I can make sure my digital tool is purposeful, targeted, and aligned with curriculum goals or user needs. This structure also helps avoid adding unnecessary features, keeping the design focused and accessible for learners.

One helpful resource for Assignment 2 is the CAST Universal Design for Learning Guidelines (CAST, 2020). This framework supports both backwards design and ADDIE by helping me plan learning goals, tools, and tasks that are flexible and accessible from the very beginning. In backwards design, it reminds me to start with a clear goal, ensuring all learners can access and achieve it, then plan supports backwards from that point. Within ADDIE, UDL fits best in the Design and Development phases, helping me choose visuals, audio, and activities that allow for multiple ways to engage, understand, and respond. UDL helped me make intentional, inclusive design choices throughout my planning.

I picked this video because it does a great job explaining the ADDIE Model, and it's super easy to get and use. In this Video, Irina from the L&D Company, talks about the ADDIE model – the 5-step framework every Learning & Development professional needs to know to design effective training programs. Whether you're creating a webinar, classroom session, or eLearning module, ADDIE guides you through the essential steps: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. She will walk you through practical tips for each phase, with examples and a free ADDIE checklist to help you apply them immediately. You can even download your free ADDIE checklist: https://thelndacademy.myflodesk.com/q...

Each phase Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation is broken down with easy-to-understand explanations and examples that are helpful for beginners in instructional design. How It Applies to Assignment 2:
For Assignment 2, we are asked to design a digital learning tool, and this resource provides a step by step structure to guide the process. It helped me:

Analyze learner needs and the learning context

Design clear goals and a logical layout

Develop multimedia elements and content

Implement the tool in a meaningful way

Evaluate its effectiveness and gather feedback

Using the ADDIE framework helps ensure that every part of the tool is intentional, aligned, and user centered.
